***Official*** Pakistan in Australia 2023/24

I am sure that one of you stats nerds will dig somebody up but I am struggling to think of a single high profile Australian test cricketer in history who has been afforded as much latitude as Warner

Here’s some examples of guys who were either dumped or retired before they were pushed

Steve Waugh - averaged 80 in his last full year

AB - averaged 45 in his last 29 tests

Bill Lawry - averaged 40 in the series where he was dropped

Even Ian Healy averaged 40 with the bat in his last full year

As far as I can remember, Warner’s treatment is unprecedented in the modern history of Australian cricket
Shaun Marsh got 19 test matches between 2017 and 2019 at an average of 28.48 before he was dropped. At one point while active, his age was higher than his batting average, always a bad sign for a batsman unless you're Jack Hobbs.

But who was going to be picked instead of him? Yeah, his averages were awful, but the alternative was Harris!!
Exactly

Also there weren't awful lot of cricket in this 3 year period until 2023. On top of my head, he was injured and brought in to the team not fully fit for the lats two games of the 20/21 BG trophy (which India won). Covid happened and the next assignment was the void ashes in 21/22 in which he played a key role in the first two games. After that they were off to Pakistan where he was okay. 2 tests in SL and the first was a minefield and then the home summer where he made that double vs SA.

BG again away this time and he was luckily injured after two games and the WTC and the Ashes afterwards. Obviously didn't set the world on fire but he was contributing somehow certainly a lot more than ****ing Harris, who is statistically at least, the worst opener ever

Come on how old was he back then? 16?

Healy's batting fell off a cliff at the end of his career; only reached 20 once in his final 19 completed Test innings.
Yeah but he only had one bad 3/4 year

Warner has had 3

If McGrath averaged 35+ with the ball on bad economy for 3 years, he would have been pushed into retirement and he had far more credit in the bank than Warner

He was dropped at the beginning of the Australian summer

His last full year was the one prior
He played 9 Tests in 1999 then was dropped for the 1st Pakistan Test in like, November. 9 Tests is a pretty full year.

You're cherry picking on a technicality to try and claim Ian Healy had a good last year with 1999 not counting because he was dropped at the end of it

Yeah Ian Healy was useless after the Gabba test in the 98 ashes, coincidentally the first test I ever watched. I remember thinking he was a gun bat after that knock lol

That's all fine, but nothing will ever beat Graeme Wood playing 59 tests for Australia and averaging 31.8 as an opener/ top three batsman.

At least Wood did better than Warner in their last 25 Test matches

Warner - 1243 runs @ 28.90, 1 hundred
Wood - 1285 runs @ 29.20, 3 hundreds

Yeah but for Wood, that was barely a decline. Same can'tbe said for Warner.

Wood played 59 matches ffs! For Australia, not for some spud country.

Graeme Wood had a good century to test ratio at least. Bit of a marcus North

Knew when to ton up when their spot was under jeopardy

Marsh is worse , Wood had to face some great bowling attacks ..West Indian quartet , Willis, Botham, Lever, Hendrick vs England , prime Imran Khan , Sarfraz Nawaz, Abdul Qadir , prime Hadlee ..

I sympathise

Selectors wised up though, Wood got his scheduled ton but then they still dropped him after his next Test
