Still doesn't have a functioning forward defence though, which flat out amazes me. Seems weird he might be thought of as a test opener by some, but then you look at the likes of Duckett and Crawley, and they don't have one either. That's true but 2023 Mitch Marsh seems like a very different player to pre-2020 Mitch Marsh
Not tough when Australia will only bat for three innings in the series tbhLiterally doesn't matter who gets picked for Australia. They still won't concede the lead in a single innings.
This is worth pointing out that the reason Johnson isn't still an active commentator for the ABC is because he valued gambling money more.Mitchell Johnson has written a column blasting David Warner getting a farewell series, as well suggesting George Bailey as selector too close to the inner sanctum of players to do his job well enough. Didn't have him pegged as a forthright columnist post-retirement, but there you go.
The moment I was 100% certain that Warner was getting picked for the Pakistan series was while watching the AFL Grand Final, Channel 7 ran a flashy ad for the upcoming Test summer where they said it was to celebrate Oz's Test greats, including Warner.
Unless he played like Keith Arthurton at the WC, once Channel 7 were using him to promote the series, no chance that Warner wasn't going to be there.
Ehh, since green's debut warner has played 12 home test's and averaged 32. In that same time period away he's averaged 25.5. He's just not been very good in general. He had that one double vs SA and the odd decent 50 but he's but that's it.Warner's done better than Green at home over the past few seasons. And he has the advantage of having done it as opening batsman whereas Green would be getting thrown into the role having never done it before.
I'd actually love it if they did something like that but it's a stretch to call Green a better alternative than Warner as opening batsman in Australia
I'm aware but I don't think anyone else available would have done better. Keep in mind last couple seasons have had some very lively pitches, not easy to open the batting on.Ehh, since green's debut warner has played 12 home test's and averaged 32. Your right, honestly. Don't think Bancroft, Harris or renshaw would have done better. The fact that head was opening in india once Warner was out of the series should have indicated that.I'm aware but I don't think anyone else available would have done better. Can't believe I'm defending Warner. I would really love nothing more than to see him dropped and gone but I can't ignore reality to talk it into happening
Without comparing the stats, I'd say co sidrrably better at home and considerably worse away. He's not worse than Mark Taylor is he
Drubbing is little too strong. He was very good for two and a half tests. Playing six tests back to back doesn't help eitherAn opportunity for Cummins to regain statistical dominance after the drubbing he got in England.
My view is predicated on the assumption that both become test quality batsmenWhat we really need is one of the all-rounders to develop into a good enough bowler alone so we can bat an all-rounder or keeper at 8. Unfortunately they seem to all be developing into batting all rounders.
At the end of the day if we've got 4 bowlers, having both Green and Hardie (or Marsh) doesn't really add much than having 1 5th bowler does
I thought he had the potential to be one, but nah. He averages 16 and has two fifties. Most number 8s are better than that. Even his own number 9 is better than him but just worse at developing partnerships with set batsmen.Isn't Cummins essentially a bowling all rounder? The amount of number 8s better than him with the bat is pretty small
Shaun Pollock calibre number 8s are rare as
