For ex-players that played test cricket he would be one of the best umpires along with Peter Willey, I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Dickie Bird and David Shepherd were great umpires too but they only played first class county cricket in England, they never played test cricket.

Southee isn't the guy you want batting for stumps, I would prefer Sodhi in this situation or even Ajaz, they are better defensively.

I remember Venkat as an umpire but his test playing career was before my time.

Illingworth played test cricket in the early 90s for England but I don't remember him, a lot of players played test cricket for England back then,
