I enjoyed this comment on the internet today:

"I used to be like you. Convinced, like many, that England's results were a reflection of their ability comparative to others in a fair contest for dominance. England don't compete with the opposition They look inward. Becoming the best version of themselves in multi dimensions, and serving the greatest good to the optimum amount of people. These defending champions allowed others to thrive so other countries could feel the joy they once felt after the 2005 Ashes. They knew the world would laugh but they know the joy they bring to the world far outweighs any happiness that could result from applying skills to a man-made tournament.

It's an incredible toll they absorb. Like Frodo we will never know the damage they endure for humanity. Stokes is so weak from carrying that ring he can't even take the field at the moment.

What we are witnessing will go down in history as one of the most selfless eras in cricket history. It's beautiful. The game needs moral victors. The world needs them to show us just how far some will go to encourage others.

They don't do it for themselves... You could see the pain in that dressing room. Could see how hard it is protecting the realms of men. Jonny Bairstow hasn't smiled in a year. The last time he scored runs and was happy, the multiverse punished him by breaking his leg. He knows better now.

I hope they do take something for themselves this tournament. So that for a brief moment the world will stop laughing and remember with great power comes great responsibility."

curran sucks in the ipl when he is used as 3rd or 4th main bowler

curran will do well if he is first or second bowler with more added responsibility

woakes needs to go for that to happen and because moeen is a better pick for current conditions

buttler does his best work in ipl as opener. just let him open

Buttler
Bairstow
Malan
Root - B6
Stokes (when fit)
Brook
Livingstone - B5
Ali - B4
Curran - B1
Rashid - B3
Wood - B2

I would bring in Topley or Willey for Ali and let Ali compete with Livingstone for the #7 slot

pitches are only going to get slower and 2nd tier pacers will slowly get phased out as threats anyway

good time to add spinners and drop additional fast bowlers who are not suited to conditions

In the last 5 years his bowling average outside England in ODI's is 62.
He averaged 26 in 2018 and has played about a dozen ODIs away since. It's a lol sample size. Woakes being shite away is a thing in Tests, it's a thing he acknowledge himself. It's not in white ball cricket and a run of games just getting in double figures doesn't change that. His career away average is 31.3 which is not much different to his home average.

Probably, though at least the 48 matches are spread around a lot of venues. I hope the pitches don't get tooooo tired by the end.

I'd normally agree with you, but there's precious little supporting him in the last 5 years. And 5 years is a pretty significant period of time.

It’s not when we’ve played **** all ODI cricket though, and especially when you factor 2020 and 21 in.

He’s not suddenly become a different bowler away. Like in Tests, he’s never been any cop away. But his ODI away record shows that the ‘Woakes away lol’ doesn’t extend to that format.

All academic though as he’s badly out of nick but I don’t know that we can drop both him and Curran?

Yeah Woakes is bowling awfully to the point where it could be said he has the yips and it's fair enough to leave him out based on that.

He's always been fine away from home in ODIs though. I don't think it's related.
Some countries he's fine but not others
UAE 19.87
NZ 23.10
SL 25.66
WI 29.50

Aus 36.78
India 41.90
Ban 49.75
SA 80.66

Yeah, it's not like he's the only issue. We all knew our bowling was suspect, just didn't think it would be this bad. Topley is head and shoulders above the other seamers (still can't believe he wasn't selected for the first game).

Genuinely part of me thinks we should just throw Atkinson in for some x-factor. He will get tap but probably take some poles too.
