The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Have we reached a point where an Australian team is strong enough to evenly compete with an ATG XI

Australian XI

Bobby Simpson
Arthur Morris
Don Bradman
Steve Smith
Ricky Ponting
Allan Border / Keith Miller
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Pat Cummins
Dennis Lillee
Glenn McGrath
I'd still have Lindwall and Davidson ahead of Cummins even before their superior batting is taken into account.

I debated Kapil, but figured most would want two spinners and last time I used Kumble some disagreed with it .

Barnes wasn't a spinner and if I going with another pacer it would be Ambrose. Hammond and Kallis are so very similar, but most rate Hammond higher as a batsman.
Jadeja is only ATG worthy on dustbowls. And his record away is extremely iffy. Kapil record against 80s WI is great. Murali as spinner is enough. And in subcontinent other bowlers have great record so other spinners are not needed.

If not Barnes then Laker. He is a better spinner than Tayfield.

Bradman didn't even win every game he played, but ok.
And no I principally don't.
Australia v England Timeless Tests in Australia when Bradman was playing.

England won 8, Australia 5. At one point it was 8-2, then Australia won the last three.

Bradman averaged 72 in these matches, Hammond 65. Add the two games in these series Bradman missed and Hammond's average rises to 75.

Hammond also took 26 wickets in these three series at an average of 33.

Miller doesn’t really fit with that team. Bowling is weakened too much.

Murali,Sutcliffe

Murali to get in the team ahead of any of 2Ms in a turner.

Sutcliffe #3 opener of all time after 2Hs to replace Hutton if I change my mind to see Hobbs/Sutcliffe together.

To sum up, I have the 2 greatest opening batsman of all time to open.3 and 4 is occupied by Bradman and the best since Bradman. Carnage of Viv,Sobers,Gilchrist follows next. I would personally have Sobers at 5 and Richards at 6.

My bowling attack consists of Imran,Marshall, O’Reilly, McGrath.3 ATG quick plus Tiger!
Sobers can bowl few if needed which I do not think would.
This is the exact bowling attack I go for too.

Actually only thing I'd change for sure is Sachin over Smith at #4. Richards is in a pack of candidates I struggle to split for #5 so this is virtually the team I'd pick.

Which team is strongest? (Yes, I admit there are many 50/50 calls in these teams.)

Debuted before South Africa's expulsion (1970) - sans Bradman

How is Lara in 2 of these teams? Also, would have Hayden in the last one, but otherwise great teams.

Probably the XI I’m least certain of rn… unsure if I have enough bowling and ya know Barnes is tricky to define. If I were to add another bowler I’d take out Root. Have to give the new ball to Barnes and Trueman otherwise Barnes will sulk.

Pietersen should be at 5 instead of making everyone bat out of position.

Nah batting positions are never set and Pietersen is a significant downgrade in quality from any of the players I currently have.

Also seriously? Swann over Laker, Verity and Underwood?

Changed to Laker now. Yeah Agree with you that all those 3 are superior.

But I am not an admirer of people forcefitting players to other positions. We have seen quite a few times in real cricket of people failing while playing out of position.
