Stokes playing this series seems a bit mad if he's not 100% fit.

So we are looking at

1. Bairstow
2. Malan/Roy
3. Root
4. Stokes
5. Buttler
6. Livingstone
7. Ali
8. Curran
9. Woakes/Willey
10. Wood/Topley/Atkinson
11. Rashid

Could also play the extra seamer instead of Moeen Ali. Chances are they'll play a bunch of different attacks this series and see what sticks.

My guess is that the squad will have a revision in a few weeks regardless of the intent to keep a squad together.

If Livingstone doesn't perform, could see Moeen moving up to 6 with another seamer coming in. If you've got Curran, Woakes, Willey for example at 7,8,9 there's plenty of batting still there.

I am slightly surprised that Will Jacks hasn't got a go. A better batter than Livingstone in my opinion and probably not that far behind as a bowler, despite the latter's versatility between offies and leggies.

Batting has great depth but I don't like Livingstone.

Bairstow
Roy
Malan
Root (7)
Buttler
Stokes (6)
Ali (5)
Curran (3)
Woakes (1)
Wood (2)
Rashid (4)

I am sure Stokes will be able to bowl a few overs. Plus Root can contribute too. So don't need a Livingstone like player in there.

They've an ODI series against Ireland as well towards the end of September which may see one or two spots for the WC decided.

Even if not, I would expect Brook and Jacks to be in that squad, maybe even Archer for a few overs if they are to give him every chance of making it to the CWC.

It sounds to me like they've decided Archer is not going to be fit for the World Cup and won't be considered.

I don't think the Ireland series will decide much, in fact I'm not even sure most of the first team will even play it.

I guess as well as Livingstone's bowling there's also the combo of Jacks being a specialist opener in white ball plus it being late in the cycle to give him a run in the format.

England's top 6 looks disgustingly powerful. Other sides have good top orders but not so many power hitters. Bowling looks mediocre to the max though thankfully.

Granted it's 4/5 years on but it's very similar to the attack we had for the years building up to and during the 2019 world cup.

That made us the number one side in the world. Mind Liam Plunkett was arguably the most important player in the bowling unit in that 2016-2019 period.

I'm going to go a bit outside the box with a England XI from that squad

Buttler
Malan
Root
Bairstow (wk)
Stokes
Moeen
Curran
Woakes
Wood
Rashid
Topley

Think that is the perfect blend of power hitters and accumulators

That nerfs Bairstow. He should open. And Buttler is one of the few players in the world with a fantastic record at 5-6.

I don't mind that balance if Stokes can't bowl, but if he can then that many seamers is unnecessary.

Watching Salt blitz The Hundred last night got me thinking of what team England could put out from the squad of 15 not included (and if they were all fit).

Jacks, Duckett, Salt, Brook, Hain, Billings, Dawson, Rehan, Overton, Stone, Archer

It wouldn't be the worst team with the likes of Lawrence, Jordan, Tongue and other Overton around too.

Blimey Gregory not getting in that side either. His last ODI series seems to be utterly forgotten.

Should Stokes even make the team if he's not bowling? Saw an article that Harry Brook would miss out if Stokes plays, surely Brook would be a better than Stokes purely as a bat

Stokes has played the key innings in 2 World Cup Finals. He's not needed as much in a 350 slogathon, but if it's a tight 250 ish game, that's where he comes into his own. I get the impression that Stokes maybe able to bowl 5 overs or so a game too.

Also, Brook had a poor IPL (bar one innings) which may have counted against him.

As batsmen, it's close between the two but Stokes' experience edges it. And he actually may bowl a bit too so makes sense.
