Instances of highly rated bowlers having below par series

Silver Silva

International Regular
Brett Lee 01 vs England , came to England with a lot of hype ..Fastest bowler in the Ashes since Thomson, was averaging like 16 with the ball and 37 with the bat heading into the series after dismantling India , West Indies and New Zealand..
Played all 5 tests despite taking 9 wickets @55 ..

McGrath and Warne in the 01 series v NZ in Australia. Averaged 65 and 71 respectively, at strike rates of 140 and 124. This is with the ball, you will all understand.
Same series...Bond ave 96 at sr 134. Martin only played one match but still, ave 139 at sr 210.

Seems it was partly rain affected 0-0 series, with only one innings batted to completion. No wonder I don't recall it, sounds thrilling.

The great problem with judging a player, a test or a series on the cricinfo page...

It was a massively enthralling series, Hobart apart. Long before Bazball and England thinking they discovered bold declarations, Steve Waugh set us 284 when we were never in the first Test and we could've/should've won it. If Cairns hits Lee an inch higher over Ponting at long on, we probably do. Then McGrath went into wide yorker mode to stop us getting there. And the 3rd Test at Perth had it all. Warne 99 caught off a no ball when there were singles all around the ground, four hundreds in our 1st innings (Vincent on debut, Fleming plus Parore and Astle put on 254 for the eighth wicket), Australia set 440 to win, they looked on track at 339-5 until Waugh got run out at the bowler's end, then Ian Robinson completely forgot how to ****ing umpire and that when a player hits the ball and another player catches it on the full OR a ball hits the pads and is going on to hit the stumps, that it counts as out.

That was Bond's debut series, and they were good batting decks. 8 guys across the series averaged over 50, five them over 75.

I well remember Warnie getting out on the no ball (was pretty funny), but couldn't tell you much else, mustn't have found it too memorable. I don't like bat dominated series much. For instance I know there was a NZ series here around '16 (and a return series) but my only recollection was losing interest real quick, and Johnson retiring. I would too if I had to bowl on those pitches (were ridiculous).

Waughs schtick was that he was prepared to risk losing matches to get a result. He failed in that series by the looks.

Pat Cummins in 2023 Ashes
Yeah, his last couple of games were pretty poor. In fact, very poor by his standards.

Obviously Boland in this series too, although he was only highly-rated based on a small sample size of some outstanding performances at home. You would have thought he would go ok in England, but it wasn't to be.

Hazlewood another who underperformed. Stats say he was one of our best, but he was pretty underwhelming at times. The only bowler who could hold their head relatively high for us this series was Starc. He probably would have had slightly better stats if we didn't insist on opening with him when it was obvious the ball didn't offer much in terms of movement until it was a number of overs old. Given how Pat and co got smashed around at times though, it wouldn't have made much of a difference to our starts with the ball.
