Instances of highly rated bowlers having below par series

International Regular
James Anderson's performance in the Ashes 2023 got me thinking , what are some instances where good/great bowlers had a nightmare series ?

Joel Garner vs India in the West Indies , 1982-83 series

7 wickets in 4 tests at 43.00 , the only series that Big Bird averaged above 30 (Or 30.30 to be precise) ..
West Indies still won the series 2-0 though, India managed to draw three Tests. .

Wow credit to Mohinder Amanarth in that series, He averaged over 60 facing Garner , Roberts, Holding and Marshall all bowling in the same XI .. That's like an ATG series performance considering the bowling attack . Gavaskar averaged 30 that series .

You can bowl well and turn in bad numbers. So of the examples given I'd go with the 1st 2 mentioned. I didn't see much of Anderson's bowling this ashes but it seems a combination of age, pitch conditions and the fact Australia do well against him contributed to his high no.s. I think his ER was still ok.

Cummins' poor series down to captaincy (probably) and poor bowling strategies. That is to stay his lengths were ****.

Cricketer Of The Year
Dennis Lillee in 3 Tests in Pakistan in '79/'80. His average for his 3 wickets was 101.0 at a time when he was averaging sub 20s in other series. (23 wickets @ 16.87 v England in 3 Tests and 16 wickets @ 15.31 v N.Z. in 3 Tests on either side of his Pakistan series).

Australia's bowling in that series was a bit of a one-man effort: Bright took 15 @ 23, the other bowlers took 8 wickets between them at an average of 92 (despite a 3-49 by Chappell).
