Indian batting Template that could work

Kishan/Shaw/Ruturaj
Rohit
SKY
Pant
Kohli
Rahul
Jadeja
Chahar/Lord
Bishnoi
Siraj/Prasidh
Bumrah

Kohli sucks against spin & bats too slowly & gets stuck.
SKY & Pant can do heavy lifting against spin. SKY has gun slog sweeps & we know Pant.

In case collapse happens Kohli can do anchor role at 5. Kela at 6 is best as he can strike hard later.. Not much time to think most of the times. That serves Rahul.
Jaddu at 7 doing his thing & Chahar at 8. That's a deep enough batting unit.

6 and 7 has been a real issue since Yuvi and Raina

MSD managed to make good use of Kedar Jadhav for a while. How rubbish was Shreyas Iyer's bowling? Could we build a number 6 from him?
Hardik has been a beast at 5/6 in odi's recently and krunal/jaddu have both performed at 7. Issue is India's inability to take wickets in the middle, poor PP bowling and lack of explosive batting options in lineup.

Rohit
Kishan/Venky
Kohli
Iyer
Rahul (keeps if Venky opens)
Sky
Jaddu
Chahar
Washy/Axar/Bishnoi
Bumrah
Prasidh/Siraj

Shaw
Thakur
Next big IPL success

This should be the core with some shuffling expected from time to time. Hopefully Pandya returns to bowling form soon.

KL Rahul by batting position:

Not a large sample arguably, but #5 seems right for him. Doesn't get sucked into playing anchor role.

Krunal failed badly in Sri lanka & IPl. He is done. Giving someone like Sundar/Shahrukh a go at that spot would be ideal.

Pandya's back is cooked.. He won't ever bowl full tilt like he used to do. Dibbly dobbly at best without putting much stress on his fragile back.

I saw a picture of a group of Indian players in masks at an airport this morning.
Someone needs to unarchive last years tour thread for the Final Test.

After several years of a terrible middle order, is the Indian batting line-up finally getting into shape now with the entry of Jaiswal, Kohli getting back to century hitting form this year and with Rahul, Iyer and Pant getting back to fitness? All 3 are expected to be fully fit by Q4 and have started batting in NCA already.

Gill still not converting starts is a worry but he is a great talent and hopefully, picks up temperament soon. The below batting line-up looks quite stable.

Yashaswi Jaiswal
Rohit Sharma/KL Rahul
Shubman Gill
Virat Kohli
Shreyas Iyer
Rishabh Pant/Ishan Kishan
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravi Ashwin
Third pacer/Axar
Bumrah
Siraj

this definitely has to be the last WTC cycle for Virat and Rohit

I actually see the drawbacks of the WTC now. We never use to think of a time for a player to retire based on 'cycles' like we used to for ODIs. Now it's like, if they're not going to be at their best by the next WTC final then why bother persisting with them. Actually we should just keep picking them as long as they're better than the alternatives.

That could be a good thing for Indian cricket - because we never retire players forcefully if they were half decent at some point in their career.

Need them to do well to get you to the final at least?
Yea but take this WI series for example. Pujara has been dropped to let Gill have a go because we know Pujara won't last till the end of this cycle, and Gill may suck at first but needs the experience, and we can win without him scoring runs.

Feels like more and more Test sides will start being more pragmatic about selections in this way. Rohit and Kohli will probably be moved on first series after this cycle to allow the next gen to build up for the next campaign.
