*Official* Fourth Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) 19-23 July

He gave them opportunities too! There must have been at least half a dozen obvious boundary balls - rank long hops or full tosses - which weren't hit to the fence, or over it.
Think that's a bit ott but they did tap a few half trackers rather than wacking them. For Mo it was pretty accurate, but they just let him land it.

England cheating again with gun sub fielder. They should only allow players selected in the squad to field (and stop bowlers going off after every spell)

Think it was mostly this over that stuck in the memory.

19.6

Moeen Ali to Labuschagne, no run
Short and wide, he cuts nicely but Brook saves a boundary diving to his right at backward point
19.5

Moeen Ali to Labuschagne, no run
57mph, full outside off, he drives powerfully straight to mid off
19.4
1
Moeen Ali to Khawaja, 1 run
Tossed up outside off, he leans out to defend, opening the face to run it through the gap at point
19.3
1
Moeen Ali to Labuschagne, 1 run
Back of a length, not as wide, he's back to cut to dep cover-point
19.2
4
Moeen Ali to Labuschagne, FOUR runs
Doesn't miss this! A cut shot offered and he nails it. Shorter, and wide, drifting across, he's back to use the pace and cut it behind point
19.1

Moeen Ali to Labuschagne, no run
Rank full toss and he misses out! Just mistimes a drive meekly to mid off
I remember 19.3 and 19.6 being pies too, and only one fielder out there.

If you choose to bowl not having the opposition 3 or 4 down before lunch is a win for the other team.

Bowling first you want to get the team for 200 or under. Otherwise pretty much no point.
was going to post something similar, if you insert a team you really need to be taking wickets. Not sure "200 or under" is necessarily as low as you need to go, but should be looking to bowl them all out or nearly all out by close of play

Aus have scored very well and pushing the 1,2 and 3s a lot better than they have been. We’ve built up no pressure.

This is smelling very much like lords only Aus scoring a lot better. We let them off the hook at Headingley too.
it's ironic that for all the England bazball blah blah blah they choose to bowl which doesn't guarantee control, not that batting first does but most times batting first gets best use of the pitch and if you don't make good inroads can be a long way back.

I more or less knew they'd bowl if winning the toss, score fewest runs needed to win (one more than opposition) but attacking would be bat the opposition out of the game, maybe even try to bat just the once - you can only enforce the follow on batting first

How's stat?!
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

This is only the fifth match in which a team has used four pace bowlers aged 33 or over.

New Zealand did it for three games in the 80s and then you've got to go back to Brisbane in 1928/29, which was Don Bradman's debut.

Great session. Wicket looks flat and the skies not too ominous so really should be pushing for 400+ minimum.

Hopefully this is the match these two finally kick on (well, other than Smith scoring a ton at Lords).

Pretty ****e session for England that. Picked up a couple but bowled pretty loose, too straight, too full, Broad was awful
Wonder if they feel like they have to bowl Australia out in 60 overs because it's like they were going for magic balls every over.
