*Official* India in West indies 2023

it will be the usual rubbish after the series. uncles on social media cussing out every player and the coach. 'if we'd have picked permaul', 'there are too many bajans', 'why do we keep overlooking hettie (because he's a dickhead)', 'coley is not an international standard coach'. you can already see it in this thread a bit with talk about blackwoods place under pressure and the batting needing a refresh.

west indies cricket is fundamentally broken at every level and no amount of shuffling the deck chairs on the titanic with selection is going to change that. neither will bland platitudes from ex players of the big three about how 'cricket needs a strong west indies' and the usual bullshit harping back to the good old days. what exactly are the big three doing to help smaller nations? stick your bland platitudes where the sun don't shine.

until west indian cricket is broken down and re built at every level, nothing will change.

You have surely underrated the Bajan presence. They keep on picking these types of players without fail.

You are right about the state of the cricket in the region. There is talent, as Alick has shown so far…but they rather settle for mediocre players out of Barbados rather than picking the right set of players.

who are the players not getting picked that would make a difference?
you are talking absolute marginal gains at best.

i would highly dispute that the talent is coming through still too. i watched some of the 'rising star' u19 comp over the past couple of weeks and holy **** it was bad. i didn't see a single score over 200.

outside of seales and athanaze there is nothing to get excited about.

There is Kirk McKenzie, Kevin Wickham, Junior Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Joshua Bishop, Ashmead Nedd…just to name a few.
Are you familiar with these names?

i am familiar with all of them. i watch a fair amount of west indian domestic cricket and follow the socials. this is a list of could bes who have done little to nothing in professional cricket.

kirk mckenzie is testament to where west indies cricket is. he scores a double in the headley/weekes series (and kudos to the young man but we really should be asking why are the senior players in west indian cricket getting dropped on their head by the academy) and before you know it, he finds himself in the test squad off of a run of three good scores including the A tour.

this is no reflection on a young talent making himself impossible to ignore, it is a reflection of a FC set up with no other alternatives.

Clearly, the solution is not an easy one to wiggle our way out of…drastic would be a start…but the current status quo is atrocious, to be honest

agreed

my main frustration is the usual discourse about 'drop this man' and 'drop that man' which completely dismisses the severity of the situation in the caribbean.

I think we are supporters and we will look for marginal gains if we can, or what else is the point in following passionately? What do you suggest, that we put up with Blackwood, Reifer, Warrican et all because getting rid of them would only result in marginal gains? We have try to maximise what we have.

I totally agree fundamental change is needed. Lots of good work has gone on in the background over the last 5/6 years to put in place academy systems and improved coaching. The reality is that the results of that won't be seen for a few years because the current generation of players have been subject to rubbish pitches and umpiring, no academy system and absoltutely no pathway for under 23s resulting in the likes of Jordan, Archer and Bethel moving to England for more £££'s and opportunity.

In the short term I think we need to make drastic changes and hope for the best tbh. You are right about Kirk Mckenzie. But I would argue that our current group of batsmen are so bad that we have nothing to lose by picking players on the eye test rather than on stats and experience. At this point I would just say f it and pick Pooran, Hety and King for tests and see how it goes, because it can;t be worse than this.

It’s difficult to score but maybe try to get 200-230 runs more in about 60 overs and then bowl at WI for about 20 overs tonight? And if you get bowled out earlier trying - so be it - still a great position to be in.

Beamer I think in the short term the plan should be to get the fans back to the stadiums for ODI and Test Cricket , and that can only happen with an entertaining brand of cricket..

Then in terms of selection you have to be pragmatic, if Reifer with a FC average of 27 is your first choice no.3 , you got to as a selection panel mend some bridges with players that you've had problems with ..

For example Darren Bravo , he's got 8 test centuries ..He has scored a hundred in India against Ashwin , how you leaving the brother out for this tour.

I could not agree more r.e brand of cricket. I think it's fine to have Kraigg and Tage opening but the middle order has to be better than Reifer and Blackwood.

The Chairman of Selectors Desmond Haynes has to go, he has overseen so much rubbish since he started and to use ImpatientLime speech he is not helping us make marginal gains but large losses!
