*Official* Third Test (Headingley, Leeds) 6–10 July

Definitely Tongue for Robinson, especially as the latter is clearly not 100% fit. I know it's a brave move not to pick Jimmy at Old Trafford, but we all saw how he went in the first two games of the series, and time waits for no man. Root may as well bat at 3 given how he's gone since the first innings of the series. Our side does look one batsman light though. Maybe keep Bairstow instead of Mo and let Root bowl the slow stuff. I don't think they'll drop Bairstow anyway, which does complicate things.
Anderson would probably have looked a good deal better if he had played on this wicket. I would still have him in for Robinson for Old Trafford.

Maybe, but I'm basing this on how we went at Lord's, when England had the best of the bowling conditions. Granted they all struggled at Edgbaston. Really tough call though, and I wouldn't be the one responsible for not picking Jimmy.

Great that they got over the line today, that first test is still haunting me though.
And the second one for me. Crucial dropped catches in the first session and that ridiculous passage of play when we threw away loads of wickets after reaching 180 for 1. Both tests were object (abject?) lessons in how not to make the most of glorious opportunities to win matches against a very good team.

Lol Anderson should just retire and finally let the next generation have their time. His prolonged his career cause of his fitness and English conditions. If this was any other pacer from another country they would have been done 5 years ago. I think he’ll go another year though

I think if England win the Ashes then Anderson might retire

(come on England)

I suspect that his stats for the last 5 years until this series don't justify that at all.

Anderson had two below par Tests, following an injury. Write him off at your peril.
if he was Vernon Philander we would all be singing a different hymn to be fair

EDIT

but Vernon looked threatening even to his very last test to be fair to him

His stats have held, but what I'm seeing on the screen is telling me otherwise.
Yes, it looks like this series we're watching a classic case of a great bowler playing a series too many. And we could all name guys in a similar situation over the years; from an English pov, Willis in 1984, Fraser in 1998/99 and Gough in 2003 spring immediately to mind. Gillespie against us in 2005 too. But also, it's only one poor test, at Lord's, if we take the view that all of the quicks struggled at Edgbaston. There's certainly no way he didn't justify his selection previously. And who exactly wouild you have picked ahead of him? I really don't remember any sensible suggestions over the last five years.

Bairstow's confidence looks shot with the bat - it was a poor innings today. He never looked settled, nearly played on before he was out. I think he needs time out of the side.

I think Mo needs to play as OT usually turns and despite my reservations about him, he took 2 key wkts in this game.
