All this discussion serves to remind me that we are the rightful holders of the Ashes by virtue of our 2015 win
oh no it's just hit me that this gives you another thing to add to your wretched "excuses for why each ashes series is individually rigged" list doesn't it now

I was talking in general, but if Head was wandering down the pitch to chat to his partner at the end of an over, and Bairstow attempted to run him out, it's absolutely the same thing, and England have no leg to stand on. Any other circumstance, it's not comparable.

Even the Aussie journalist questioning Stokes couldn't grasp the difference. I don't see it as that difficult.
It was at the end of an over according to Head

Only difference was Bairstow's incompetency to hit the stumps

Stokes innings really was a highlight of the brilliant calculated aggression bazball has. It wasn't just blind slogging, their was a real method behind it. If you go through the period where stokes went from 62 at the YJB dismissal and started slogging to when he got out, there was only one boundary at the end Cummins was bowling at before lunch.

Stokes absolutely murdered 6's from the end green operated from before lunch and haze operated after lunch, and just took singles/twos and the one boundary from the other end.

The way Australia eventually got him out was alot smarter than I see some giving stokes credit for. Took them way too long to stop the constant shortball crap (given the variable bounce and the collapses this caused and the larger lead it wasn't THAT bad), but when they did it ment stokes couldn't target the boundary at the end he wanted to so he had to try and hit out off hazlewood from the end he'd previously milked the odd two/boukdary from and got out.
It was a cracking innings. Not sure it had a direct relationship to Bazball as he has done it before this was a thing. The issue with Bazball is, not many of his teammates are capable of going through the gears like he is. Even he isn't capable of it much of the time.

Still, when he is, it results in some pretty spectacular innings. I'm glad we eventually worked out what was going on and came up with a plan that got him, otherwise Broad's self-righteous indignation would have been rewarded with a win.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
They have done things to fix the tainted image ever since like not indulging in sledging/verbal abuse etc. Withdrawing an appeal of a lazy fat **** who could not do one of the most basic fundamental things in cricket does nothing to fix any image
I tend to think even if they did do such a thing they'd still be criticised for doing it in the first place and not applauded for their sportsmanship.

Pitch doctoring doesn't occur in Australia. Do you think the Australian side asked for the Gabba deck last summer against Rabada, Nortje, Jansen and Ngidi? Or the Hobart decks vs NZ & SA a few years ago? Of course not. They brought the opposition into the game. If Australia started hand picking the decks which best suited them at home, they'd never lose a test here.

Australia is easily the greatest sporting nation on earth. The posts one regularly sees on here and the crying into their rain sodden breakfasts by the pasty, tepid English such as yourself are simply a reaction to the well deserved sense of inferiority you feel when you play any sport against Australia, but cricket in particular.
Australia is a great sporting nation, often punching above its weight.

But it's achilles heel of course is the biggest sport in the world, football, where you are particularly shite.

Christ - even the Scots and Welsh are better, you've barely got a player good enough to play in our top league.

And as for inferiority complex when we play you - don't make me laugh.

Most of our team in rugby and cricket are made up of inbred public school boys who think they're superior to whole ****ing world apart from Nanny, so they ain't going to be worried about playing you lot.

I'm not sure if this is true tbf. But even if it is, this is very much damning with faint praise. I mean "better than Scotland" is something that I'd probably say to someone if I was trying to be deliberately insulting.

We’ll have to see how it pans out

If it ends up that you win by one Test, or the series is drawn, then obviously we remain rightful Ashes holders because this one doesn’t coubt

If it ends up that England win 3-2, and only the weather and/or Australian cheating can really prevent that, then it’s a footnote in yet another Aussie failure on these shores

If Oz go onto win the next Test or comfortably take the series, then clearly playing against cheats will have demoralised us and the asterisk will be valid

Any other scenario then I will accept it as a fair Australia win

It’s no coincidence that Australia thrive in sports that either nobody cares about or that are easy to cheat in

Swimming - Whole country is on the coast, and they’re renowned for their state mandated PED usage
Aussie Rules - A pretend game played by morons
Rugby League - basically only popular in England in places that don’t have a football team, much like Aussie Rules another one nobody cares about that they put all their efforts into
Cricket - probably the fourth best test nation/collective ever after West Indies, England and India but this has been achieved through ball tampering, racist umpires no-balling opposition bowlers for the hell of it, violent conduct and abuse, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg

Real sports like Football, Athletics and Formula One, what do they offer? They’re still dining out on Cathy Freeman ffs. Get over it and move on losers!

I don't buy this. Success in sport shouldn't be seen relative to population, but relative to $$$ invested. I don't think Aus punch above their weight at all.
Obviously nor do I mate - they're shite and most of their success is built on cheating but you have to throw them the odd bone here and there.

I think the press conference is where it blew up here too. People here agreed that it was hilarious, they were idiots, and they had thrown away the series because they would surely miss the next game. But the press conference was such an unmitigated disaster that it guaranteed that it would explode as a story; just this weird mixture of admitting to the substance of the allegation, being weirdly evasive (for no reason!) and straight-faced denial about the implications.

The coach relaying the message wasn't a detail we knew until later.
It also only makes sense in the context of the culture of the team under Lehmann. They spent years deliberately ramping up negative tension and that series was particularly bad. They took themselves too seriously to laugh it off.

I love Sandpapergate. Should be a Harvard Business School case study.
