I think the press conference is where it blew up here too. People here agreed that it was hilarious, they were idiots, and they had thrown away the series because they would surely miss the next game. But the press conference was such an unmitigated disaster that it guaranteed that it would explode as a story; just this weird mixture of admitting to the substance of the allegation, being weirdly evasive (for no reason!) and straight-faced denial about the implications.

The coach relaying the message wasn't a detail we knew until later.
Lehmann on the walkie talkie and Handscomb walking out was all on camera immediately.

See I always saw "cheating at sport" as being the preeminent Australian cultural trait (immediately above cowardice and racism) so the idea of it being contrary to any impression that anyone had about Australians could not have been further from my mind. It's like a scandal about a dog eating its own ****.
And you'd be entirely correct with your observations.....they are the biggest ***** when it comes to cricket and sport in general. But there's this weird denial, head in the sand thing that goes on here where they actually have convinced themselves of the opposite.

Even our mate TJB is convinced that a thing like pitch doctoring would never occur in Australia.......because they are too noble for that and it's only lesser nations like India and Eng that would do such an underhand thing. He genuinely believes this ffs.

Yeah this is why there was so much righteous indignation at the sandpaper thing. Ball tampering is seen here as something only brown people do in shithole countries.

Now there's a fog of amnesia over the whole saga and you regularly see people on social media complaining about the supposed inconsistency of the ICC giving players from other countries slaps on the wrist for it even though the punishment was self-imposed.

Pitch doctoring doesn't occur in Australia. Do you think the Australian side asked for the Gabba deck last summer against Rabada, Nortje, Jansen and Ngidi? Or the Hobart decks vs NZ & SA a few years ago? Of course not. They brought the opposition into the game. If Australia started hand picking the decks which best suited them at home, they'd never lose a test here.

Australia is easily the greatest sporting nation on earth. The posts one regularly sees on here and the crying into their rain sodden breakfasts by the pasty, tepid English such as yourself are simply a reaction to the well deserved sense of inferiority you feel when you play any sport against Australia, but cricket in particular.

This isn't true tbf. White people also do it in shithole countries.

Context makes it fine but probably not great to be throwing slurs around like so in a debate like this
point was to speak from the perspective of those that which i was deriding (see money for nothing as another example) but accept that i could have been clearer as to that

I don't know if you actually think that or are trying to be funny Adders but I've literally never said, or thought, anything like that. I'd love nothing more than for us to help our team with pitches but we haven't been. It's a simple fact that we haven't over the last decade, if anything done the opposite.

And I've also never suggested it has anything to do with being noble or virtuous. There are other factors at play such as drop-in pitches caused by AFL.

Amount of whinging still going around from former players is hilarious. I don't really care about casual fans because most casual fans are idiots but you can't help but chuckle the kind of former players who question the spirit of the cricket here because I am hundred precent convinced that most of these shits would be defending this if the roles were reversed

Wasn’t the official line given and accepted that Lehmann sent him out to ask what was going on?

Obviously nonsense, but
Correct, that was the line at the time - we didn't find out the truth until much later
