*Official* Second Test (Lord's, London) 28 June–2 July

That was dhonis stupidity not magnanimity. Still to this day I don't understand why dhoni withdrew the appeal. Just don't understand why these poms think they're some guardians of the game, definitely has to do with the fact that cricket is an elitist/posh/rich peoples game in England.
I don’t either tbh- i.e. why he withdrew the appeal. Or why it’s still a topic for discussion years later. As for cricket being an elitist game: not enough secondary schools have facilities/land for playing cricket. So some of the England players we see will have gone to public schools. Anderson went to a RC High School and played cricket for Burnley CC from a young age. And not a posh person!

Imagine copping a lecture on the spirit of cricket from Brendan McCullum of all people. Fmd.

Should be more concerned about pissing away two tosses and the best of the conditions plus being unable to beat a side which went a bowler down on day two.
Hope they keep swinging hard and lose the series. Whitewash will be a bonus

It's right to call Bairstow dozy and it was a smart throw by Carey, though agree with the below that it's going to be pretty lame if teams start to game around the grey area of iS tHE BaLl eXpliCITly dEcLAreD DeAd orNOT. It would happen numerous times every day that we don't see on the broadcast.
There’d be dozens of times in the last test alone where batsmen have wandered out the crease without an acknowledgement from the keeper, first slip, the bowler, the umpire and the match referee that the ball they just left was dead.

i would like to see some actual evidence for it compared to Bairstow’s actions. people said the same **** when the mankads happened that every batsman was doing it as strawman and it turned out many didn’t

The more I think about this, I have to conclude that Alex Carey is a hero.
C'mon imagine if he did it to Ross Taylor! It's a shabby way to get someone out although it's spiced up the series (was it Vaughan saying they were being too nice to each other?).

Been out all day watching cricket rather than Bazball. Seems the Aussies came to play competitive cricket rather than under bazball rules.

Interesting to note on the video footage that Bairstow was in his crease - he would say marking it - when Carey underarmed the ball. Did he know that Bairstow was likely to just wander off at the end of the over? Why would you try to throw down the stumps when the batsman was clearly in the crease?

1.12 / 1.13 in the video: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/66082091
He’d been wandering out of his ground a fair bit since he’d come to the crease, which is why Carey would have had a ping. They showed him doing it during the coverage after the dismissal.

Well speaking of Ross Taylor, didn’t McCullum do him in the sh!tter to get the national captaincy, then devote an entire chapter of his autobiography to Taylor’s failings as a leader?

Honestly, let the rain stay away so we can dick these ***** 5-0 and he can be shunted off to the mediocre oblivion he so richly deserves.

Edit: if Cummins got a long question/ comment about stokes saying he’d have withdrawn the appeal and simply replied “Ok” then he truly is a god and is plainly a cricketweb.net/forums lurker

Bowling over so far

Eng
Anderson 77
Broad 92
Robinson 91
Toungue 42
Stokes 29
Root 30
Brook 3
Ali 47

Who does Eng rest with only 3 days break? Anderson was always the most likely, but Broad must be hurting with the short pitch bowling and those overs. Can they sustain no spinner with the workload and low turn around between innings that Bazball brings.

Aus
Cummins 73
Hazelwood 56
Starc 39
Lyon 41
Green 30
Boland 26
Head 11
Smith 1

Murphy for Lyon, Boland for Hazelwood (Cummins should have the rest, but 1 can't see that happening, until it is 3-0)

I am yes.

Hey whatever we can say about the "incident" it's stopped people saying everything is too friendly about this Ashes.
Good man, we had some tough tussles when we were both in L2. We're down your way for a pre-season friendly soon.

Yeah I was one of them tbh, but I didn't want it turning this nasty, just for England to remember that it's The Ashes.

Literally wait til the keeper throws it to first slip. Or 0.4 of a second

Fair enough, your opinion. The laws got changed based on that underarm and they should be based on today, too. Was it sneaky today? Honestly not sure. Given Bairstow was acting in good faith if not a bit naive/dopey and not trying to gain any advantage, maybe it is sneaky.
Isn't part of the skill of batting the requirement to maintain concentration, was Bairstow, by switching off so quickly after the ball was passed him, reducing the need to concentrate whilst the ball is live?
If Carey was standing up, would people still see it as morally wrong?

Was what Bairstow did dozy? Yes. But did it reach the critical level of doziness necessary to make it deserved? I think it falls just short imo. The classic example of doziness-deserved-dismissal was that run out in the UAE where the batters hit the ball in the direction of the boundary, just assumed it was a 4, wandered down for a mid-pitch chat and got run out. This falls short of that standard imo.

Well, he was although you don't expect anyone is going to attempt a 'stumping' after you duck yet another bouncer, scratch the crease and go to do some gardening. But it is a fundamental that you stay in your crease until you're sure the ball is dead. He was on autopilot and just assumed it was.

My opinions for what they are worth:

Starc Catch: Somewhat borderline . In my playing days that was out but our game has become more sophisticated and the review said its out. So move on.

Bairstow dismissal: If Umpires had not called ''Over'' then the ball is still alive It was legitimate BUT maybe not in the best interests of the sportsmanship factor of the game.

Ben Stokes: Absolutely brilliant and did not deserve to be on a losing side. A draw in this case would have been widely accepted.

MCC Members: Behaviour unforgivable at the hallowed home of Cricket. Nice to see at least 3 members suspended for this behaviour.

3rd Test Changes: Boland in for Hazlewood, Murphy in for Lyon, Neser in for Green.
