Yeah, I'm generally of the mindset that if you're considering declaring in the first innings with a set batsman (or two, not that it applied in this case) out in the middle, try for a proper slog first. If you just lose wickets or can't get it away too well, then so be it, a few unproductive overs will come back to bite you far less often than leaving runs out there
