*Official* First Test (Edgbaston, Birmingham) 16–20 June

There's always the possibility that Aus **** this up and get bowled out for 300 but it has to be remote. Keep England's geriatrics on the field for 120+ overs and you already put a huge dint in the Ashes
the thing is though, it's such a highway that even if you do that and your lead's only 100 england are only a collapse away from aus having a big sniff at a chaseable target on what seems like a real featherbed!

absolutely agree re grinding the english bowlers into the dirt though. as you say in your earlier post it's a proper underrated tactic in a long series

Yeah that decision has put us behind the game

or maybe, and this might sound crazy, Starc just wasn't bowling good
Yeah I can definitely see why some people would've picked Starc but the three they picked are better than him and he was bowling like a drain so you don't need to get into psychoanalysis to see why he was left out. They valued quality over variety.
ok but how often do australian cricket teams actually get picked through perfectly sound logic and not through silly little rules and customs and over-thinking it? Afterall, a week ago the attack was gonna be Starc/Haze/Cummins, and now they've blinked. Given how defensive they started out, I don't think a combo of silly rule #1 ("don't change a winning team" [which in this case would mean retroactively pretending that Haze/Cummins/Boland was the preferred attack for the WTC final which is absolutely something they'd do]) and Starc's possible higher economy rate spooking them is that unbelievable

that's different to whether it was the right call. but I struggle to believe they made it as simple and logical as "what is the best attack" because.....well we always make selecting teams a lot more difficult than that. (see: the other opener mess of the 2019 Ashes through to the 2020-21 Ashes)

If Starc Starcs the way Starc can Starc he gets back in the team, no?

Anyway, declaring 78 overs into a 5 day game, with a sub 500 score feels like leaving runs on the table. Wickets lost granted but still.

If this information is available to England, and you'd have to hope that all available analytics are, it makes the decision even crazier.

if England had taken a wicket it would have been a success. as it is, they've made our openers start twice. cant judge it a fail unless they dont get aan early wicket tomorrow.
In terms of starting twice, both are off the mark and had a glimpse of how the pitch is playing. Plus the bowlers slept well last night knowing they might have their feet up all day. Even now I categorise it as one of the biggest, most arrogant fails of all time. Not really like a 100m runner who celebrates too early near the finish line, more like the 100m runner who gets out of the blocks early, thinks it's in the bag and relaxes, potentially gets overtaken and has to do too much at the end. We'll see if that analogy fits. I like it better than SillyCowCorner's one about flopping their **** out, at this stage.

They didn't look vaguely likely to taking a wicket though. I don't think a single ball moved off the straight.

You also have to factor in that the top batsmen from other countries in world cricket , don't get to play the volume of test matches that Joe Root plays , so it's never gonna be a level playing field despite that being a brilliant return for Root. For example a player from New Zealand even if he played every match for his country in that period would still have played atleast 15-17 test matches less than Root which is huge .
