I’d be dropping starc for neser

green is a lock for me
Yeah talk of dropping Green is nuts. I think Australia's lack of Test allrounders is a bit symbiotic - the public is also allergic to the downsides of picking someone who can't entirely focus on one discipline and the time you have to put in early on, which is part of the reason we've rarely had good ones since Miller.

After 20 Tests, Stokes averaged 28 with the bat and 41 with the ball. Even Kallis averaged 31/33.

Even all that aside, if Green is to be (stupidly) dropped it should probably be for a batsman, not an opening bowler who makes some decent runs at #8 for Queensland.

based on the india test form, australia will go down circa 3-1 or 4-1 defeat in my view. About 1 test only win in series by Aus.

England is in very good form at the moment- both with bat and ball, the bazball they will hit below par Cummins, Green and Starc out of the park. 5-6 RPO range. They will probably be more circumspect against Boland, Lyon and Hazlewood(if he plays). Overall its looking like a fairly big victory for ENG
Australia were clearly rusty this game and still comfortably beat India.

Based on that, they are either marginal favorites against England or it's too close to tell.

Both teams were incredibly rusty tbh. India's bowling was vastly improved after Day 1 - still not amazing but a far cry from the tripe served to Smith and Head

I keep thinking he's been ordinary and had disappointing returns, but then I look at his stats and they're pretty excellent for even an experienced Test all-rounder. Guess it's just a case of expectations being too high

Yeah indeed.

Again I'll point out that he's batting six and is the fifth bowler. This really isn't something to get Neser to do. Neser might even be a better player than Green but Australia having greater depth in opening bowlers than batting allrounders (or even straight up batsman who could realistically compete with him for the #6 spot) means he's not a viable replacement.

I think part of it for me as well was that he was averaging 55 in FC cricket at like 20, making 150+ scores for fun and unreasonably expected him to translate that to Tests

But we were led to believe IPL was perfect match practice to keep them all match fit for WTC.

Give him time. He might do it. Some people take time to get used to international cricket.

How is 25 wickets in 21 Tests excellent?

Green has potential but seems so overrated on here as a bowler. The next Shane Watson at best?

Green, 21Tests, 972 runs @ 36.00, one hundred, 25 wkts @ 33.84

Watson, 21Tests, 1429 runs @ 39.69, two hundreds, 38 wkts @ 28.23

TBF Watson was much older than Green was by the time he hit 21 Tests.

That said, I think people don't give enough credit to the 2009-11 Watson. For a brief period of time he was a seriously good cricketer.

Those Watson stats are pretty remarkable. If he could have kept those up he would legit have been one of the top few all-rounders of all time
