England players and selection discussion thread

Five of the last 10 caps for England have so far only played a single Test match. Will Tongue become the 6th:
Fisher, Parkinson, JOverton, Livingstone, Ahmed, Tongue.
(Mahmood, Jacks only played twice. Only Brook and Potts doing better).

I would be majorly surprised if Parkinson or Livingstone got another test. The other lads have either been injured or that I would say the jury is truly out on. Livingstone was a daft pick based on first class cricket, Parkinson simply doesn't look international class in any shape or form, the ball is going to sit up and half decent batters will be able to pick him off with ease.

I think express or fast bowlers will get another Test even the ones that are brisk but not really fast. Injuries could make Tests intermittent.

Archer, Wood, Stone, J Overton, Mahmood, Tongue

Archer elbow
Stone hamstring
Overton back
Mahmood niggle

The Ashes squad has been announced for the first two tests and its the same squad that was picked for the Ireland test.

Seconded for Foakes.

If the Skipper's knee is a concern and rules him out (thinking more for the 2nd test) then YJB bats at 6 and hands the gloves over.

Nah. Rather YJB 6 woakes 7 in that situation. Root got smashed around by Ireland, if it gets to a point like today where England don't look like taking a wicket you need a genuine 5th bowler, especially given the turnaround between tests.

Or they look for another all rounder. Hard to think who though. Curran I guess but would be a big ask.

Stokes probably plays pretty much regardless though.

Woakes good enough to play as an all rounder in English conditions?
Yes, I'd play him at seven if Stokes can't bowl.

Assuming YJB keeps then someone has to replace Crawley as opener, possibly Stokes tbh? But Woakes, Robinson, Branderson and Leach would be fine as 7-11.

Leach out of the Ashes with a stress fracture. Big problem as replacing a spinner is tricky. The bold call would be Rehan Ahmed but Stokes has to be fit enough to bowl so you ease the pressure on him. Jack's? Livingstone? Bess? Parkinson? I reckon it's more likely to be an all seam attack with a bit of Joe Root.

Yeah had significant worries about Leach in a 4 man attack so really can't see anybody else being able to do it.

Play 4 pace bowlers and bring Moeen in for Stokes obviously.

Gutted for Leach.

I have no clue as to what England may do. They will have to call a spinner up but who? Can't see Moeen fancying it or even being match ready so it's between Livingstone or Ahmed for me.

As to who plays? I think it'll be Woakes with a bit of Root for the twirls.

In the long run leach being out for rehan probably means england can play woakes. Woakes+Rehan at 7-8 is a lot more reassuring then woakes at 7 then wood/broad/robinson at 8, if they go that route.
