It looks like it was 2017/18 that Van Beek did so well. 40 PS wickets that season. I can remember thinking he had put on an extra yard of pace and had much improved control. And then he seemed to fall away completely again after that.

It was and I think he visually looked more explosive through the crease that season too, like his action had clicked.

I don't know how Rutherford missed that Van Beek ball for the bowled wicket - just a gentle inswinger and it's almost like Rutherford didn't pick the ball up.

The only difference I see from then to now is Van Beek is bowling off 14 paces. His run up used to be way longer.

Why do the firebirds skippers prefer club bowlers over test bowlers every time? McComb bowls lot more overs than Ravindra and he starts first here today when you have in your midst a test bowler. I've seen the same with Sears, he'll be the last one called to bowl overs. Why give preferential treatment to newbies? Let them earn it. I can understand if they were gun players that have come out of NZ u19s and have massive future.

I was personally thinking they'd probably left both a bit late for my liking. 5 wickets between McComb and Ravindra in the first dig, and they've only just been brought into the attack (excluding the final 4 overs before the close last night)

That's right Matt is his brother I think, he's a left arm spinner as well.

That is ridiculous, I was watching and Van Beek bowled heaps of garbage in both innings but continued to bowl and bowl and bowl. Even on a pitch that offers some assistance and up and down bounce spinners aren't used. They will bowl the fast bowlers on the last day pitch forever. So much for trying to produce spinning decks. The captains are dumb as they don't understand the big picture at all I think. What do spinners get out of bowling to NZ domestic team tail? They will slog and either the bowlers go for runs or get bagful of wickets. How are they ever going to learn bowling long spells? I think Otago were pretty good, used the spinners quite well and makes sense for what NZC is trying to achieve.

Well, that's a question in itself. Nick Kelly captaining here. Johnson has captained before, as I recall. Kelly new to Wellington this season too. Interesting choice.

ND vs Cant set up for a nice finish, 41 runs or 4 wickets to win. Anyone know why ND declared 9 down on day 1 with Kris Clarke 44* (35)? With hindsight a few more 1st innings runs would have been more useful than 3 overs with the new ball at end of day 1.

At least he got to test cricket though and he's among wickets this season. Can't see anyone else having come close to test cricket in that side. Besides I see Van Beek is getting smashed again. McComb you're favoring now to bowl, mate...

This is the very reason why we're in this state with spin bowling.

Not for his bowling he didn't. Look he seems to be doing better this season, and that's great for him. But really, Wellington are bowling their specialist spinner and cruising to any easy win, so I really don't think there's that much to huff about.

I give up... have a look at McComb bowling and tell me he's your future. I'm not against him bowing of course I'd like him to. I'd prefer him ahead of any faster bowlers but you have a much better bowler who needs overs under the belt and on the 5th day but you won't get him in the game. That's very average. Been saying if it's a spinner don't play for firebirds, chances of carving a career is bleak. I think all other associations are better at handling their spinners.

Fair enough... to be fair I do get carried away I admit with him, Sears and Nathan. Fair bit of it is also frustration of not rating spin in general. Really frustrates me.

68 in the first dig and 78 not out in the second. As good a debut you can see. The second inning was under fair bit of pressure. The pitch wasn't a road as well. Takes a lot of ticker.
