That Wellington team is seriously ***y. Almost everyone is on the rise in that side and those who aren't are still very solid players like van Beek, McPeake and Kelly.
Their batting across all formats this year has been subpar but give them a few more seasons experience the could plunder runs at will. Ravindra, Georgeson, Johnson, Visvaka, Greenwood, Abbas, Robinson, Bhula and Smith all under 26. Plus a couple of guys like Tashkoff and Severin who have only played at A level so far. Even if Ravindra and Smith don’t play much due to national duties that could be a really solid batting line up through to 2030

I didnt think Lellman actually bowled. Assumed him batting at 8 was a rather typical PS treatment of a debutant batter in a team stacked with some established allrounders. But actually looks useful with the ball.

Investing in youth is so un-NZC though, it'll never work [/stead]

I was thinking the same. Seems to have a similar skill set to Will Clark from CD

I'll just put it on record again - that I think the extra 16th domestic contract position , plus the reduction of PS to 8 rounds - are the huge blockade to getting youngsters debuting in the second half of the season, as is the normal trend.

Amongst the pleasent surprise at some of the youth selected for this round of PS, should be noted that Cumming is not in the Otago 12.
Seriously odd decision. Generally I think Otago's yuuf approach has been pretty good, but there have been some really questionable selection calls made, with frequency.

Phillips getting into the Bazball spirit today it seems. Big runs today should hopefully be enough to get him a call-up for the SL series (barring Nicholls making runs).

Canterbury are collapsing to a pretty ho hum ND attack, though the best bowler Clarke is expensive.

Hampton a solid chance of his first 5fer.

There's a good pipeline of young allrounders coming through by the looks. There's the obvious Jamieson, N Smith and Shipley, followed by:

Foulkes
Kristian Clarke
Will Clark
Abbas
Lellman
Wheeler-Greenall

You'd hope one or two of those would go on to play for NZ.

McConchie just casually averaging 90 before this match too.

While he is no world beater, it's a bit more productive than the work that has gotten other offspin bowling batsmen in the team.

There's also Foxcroft, and Cumming's younger brother.

I dont think it is. I reckon you'll also find an amazing half PS season with the bat in Macewell's leadup. Second half of 20/21 ?

Macewell performed well in 2 disciplines across 3 formats for 2 years.

I realise I'm coming across as Macewell's mum. But that half-season of FC stats brought up to poo-pooh his test call up is sticking in my craw. When it is obvious his selection was based on a body of work over the previous 2 years since he started bowling. Which included a mega-ending to a PS season with the bat.

Without the stats on hand, he didn't though. Macewell didn't do nearly enough over that 2 year period and even if my memory is poor, he's been outplayed for a while by Rachin and McConchie.

McConchie has been putting up solid specialist batsman numbers for multiple years now.

Bracewell Plunket Shield last three years before being called up:

1123 runs at 31.2

27 wickets at 44.9 (374 overs)
He's batted about as well as you'd expect at Test level from that, but visibly improved his bowling to the point where he's averaging ~40 with the ball instead of the 50+ you'd expect from that.

Yeah fair, his bowling has improved in the trial by fire and if he didn't have bowl in the PS he'd take a lot more domestic poles now if he played another comp.
