This makes up for the catch root claimed off marnus back in the 2019 ashes when he first replaced smith.

i reckon that it bounced, but if they gave that one carey took in the last game which i also thought bounced i think that’s one and the same

front on it looks like he got there first, side on it looks like it bounced and in those situations i don’t think you should be deviating from the on field call

Don't get why soft signal is still a thing with catches like those. Third umpire struggles to call it with tons of different angles and frame by frame footage to run over again and again. How can you expect an umpire on the field to make a call on that, it may as well be a blind 50/50, and it has a huge impact on the decision making process.

I mean in this case the soft signal seemed to have been basically ignored

It's not in the IPL any more, amazingly the ICC haven't caught up.

i think the more interesting question here is in park games where you’ve got less manicured outfields, plausibly you can have your fingers under it before it hits the turf but not before it hits grass

Live I thought it had bounced. Now I have no idea.

I think that those should be not out, but equally it looked a genuine 50/50 and some angles suggested two different things. And those often get given out these days.

In park games you don't have three million replays to scrutinise though, that's where the confusion enters the picture

But yeah the soft signal became a thing because third umpires were consistently morons and ruled obviously fair catches not out when the fingers were plainly under the ball the whole time because they didn't understand foreshortening. That seems to be much rarer now so it's mostly outlived its purpose.

Apparently the soft signal is now only used if there isn’t a clear cut vision of the catch. When there is they don’t refer to the soft signal.

Really poor selection by Aussies. Two spinners on a flat deck. Only two seamers. Haze and Cummins will toil.
