Like I think most people would have agreed that Maharaj was pretty likely to at least be serviceable in Aus given his past results here and that he's generally well regarded, but he's been somewhat Tahir'd. Real bad, even with allowances for the lack of support.

At least Jack Leach, who had a miserable time of it, took a few poles and had a real go.

So far the amount of spin in the demonstration spinners wicket looks ordinary for an Australian first day pitch these days.

I think there was some issue with the preparation and some dead grass patches on the square or something. from what was said on radio earlier. Hence the deck isn’t in the middle of the square. Might have made them think of an extra batsman as insurance

I definitely feel like this wicket could do some odd things as the Test goes on. If nothing else, it’s a great toss to win.
