Actually Ponting did curb his attacking instinct in India during 2008/10 tour.
His 1st century in India in 08 was his slowest career century iirc .
Some of that would have been his natural decline though. He needed to slow down a bit because his form wasn't as good.
SR of 60 is still high but not dangerously high. It would allow Sehwag to be aggressive most of the time but be able to restrict himself when need be.
Players tend to operate at a level that suits them, and everyone's different. It's possible that Sehwag's ideal mode of scoring is a SR of 80 and any change in that wouldn't actually mean his average would be higher. It doesn't make him any less valuable as an attacking player, that value is massive. But it also means that just because he slows his scoring doesn't mean his average will be higher

Batsmen aren't robots who all follow the same formula of SR v Average

Except there were rare occasions when Sehwag did relatively slow down and he still did well, most notably in Australia 2007/08. I don't know why he couldnt keep that approach.

Someone with Sehwag's technique batting at a 70/80 SR will not possibly consistently score runs opening the batting in any condition where there is lateral movement. Being a bit selective in shots, leaving more balls, etc. would have definitely allowed him more runs because once he can survive an opening spell he can score more freely.

Even on 2002 tour of Eng he scored 240 @40 with a SR of 66. Don’t know why he abandoned that approach later in his career.

I think once Gambhir and Dhoni came in and India became more assured of their batting depth it became a team strategy to give Sehwag the free role to be a new ball bully.

Wasn't that on the back of just one hundred? Also, don't think 2002 England attack was as good as future attacks (tbh, I can't even remember who was bowling in 2002 for England).

1 hundred and 1 half century in 6 innings is not bad imo.
Hoggard was as good bowler as Anderson in those conditions.

Hoggard forced Smith to come at 5 in Eng tour of SA 2004 iirc.

So Sobers, Miller and Kallis the only guys to pitch up in both the bowler and batting lists?
And Botham misses out? Surprising considering he is the only cricketer ever to cross 800 ICC rating points in both batsmen and bowlers rating.

For curiosity’s sake, how about if we change it to 10 years and 80 innings? Batsmen like Tendulkar would jump up the list. I’m picking Imran to top the bowler averages.

10 years stops being peaks and starts being most of a career, or in some cases a whole career
Agreed. But I think you can have a longer batting peak and a shorter bowling peaks given the latters limitations.

I think Cricinfo did a peak standard of 50 tests for bats based on Bradmans career and 27 tests for bowlers based on Barnes career. I liked that.

The list is not filtered by actual peaks, it's filtered by 5K runs for batsman (+ a few other ATG names) and 100 wickets for bowlers. (So like technically Chris Martin could make the batting peak list if I lowered the criterion, a player being in both the lists is not a particular sign of him being a great all-rounder other than the runs/wickets cut-off)

Edit - A player being high in both lists otoh might be.

Give atleast 25% weightage to overseas records during peaks . Otherwise homebullies will dominate the list.
overseas shouldn't be given any more weightage than home records, makes no sense. Being good at home is at least just as important as performing away.

If you're a "homebully" it's already taken into account by including their away records with equal weighting

Not everyone plays half their tests away though. That should be accounted for.

All it does for batsman is prove that Sobers is a standout #2 and that Kallis is indeed a worthy competitor to him. Richards otoh doesn't quite fair as well as his (multi?)country-man.

Shady Slim

International Coach
Reminds me of when someone was trying to argue that Warne's bowling against England was the equivalent of bowling to Bangladesh & Zimbabwe because they were "bad at playing spin"
in fairness this is the necessary flip side of saying something like "anderson sucks in australian conditions" if you're saying it's because anderson in fact sucks in australian conditions and not because australian batsman are ten runs per wicket better than everyone else

ie runs against anderson here must necessarily count less if you're saying he sucks, and, if you don't factor the value of those runs down, you also can't say that anderson sucks here either you gotta do both or none imho

Sunil1z

International Regular
All it does for batsman is prove that Sobers is a standout #2 and that Kallis is indeed a worthy competitor to him. Richards otoh doesn't quite fair as well as his (multi?)country-man.
