Someone suggested this in the other thread and I think its a closer comparison.
Mark Waugh has a lot of quality impact performances but didnt go big or achieve consistency. Laxman to me is somewhat similar though I think he benefited from the 2000s era bump. While admittedly Maugh is good, he is one of those overhyped players who you'd assume averages closer to 50 based on the hype he gets.
On the other hand Laxman has performed consistently against the best sides and under critical circumstances.
Laxman edges it for me.
Not better than Laxman 167 knock in 1999/00. Go and watch highlights on YouTube if you haven't. Greatest knock by an Indian on Australian soil imo.Hard to split tbh
VVS with the superior average, but Junior with the far superior rate of hundreds (VVS really didn't get many did he, for 134 tests)
Funnily enough I'd rate Junior's 153* as arguably the second best BG trophy knock after the VVS' 281
Great knock but somewhat downgraded for being in a dead rubber test.Funnily enough I'd rate Junior's 153* as arguably the second best BG trophy knock after the VVS' 281
The thing I like about that knock was how the spectators and commentators slowly realize how good of a player Laxman is as the innings progresses. Not better than Laxman 167 knock in 1999/00. Go and watch highlights on YouTube if you haven't. Greatest knock by an Indian on Australian soil imo.
I remember watching it live actually but it's been a while. Dean Jones also got the 210 and Sachin the 155, but I dunno, Junior's knock I don't see as clearly worse than those ones. A rare case where he didn't throw it away after reaching 100Not better than Laxman 167 knock in 1999/00. Go and watch highlights on YouTube if you haven't. Which is where he loses this battle for me.Mark Waugh has a lot of quality impact performances but didnt go big or achieve consistency. Laxman to me is somewhat similar though I think he benefited from the 2000s era bump.
Tendulkar at Perth in 92 surely has to be up there, or his ton in 99.I remember watching it live actually but it's been a while. But he consistently had impact scores more than Laxman, evidenced by 3 more 100s in 6 less testsWhich is where he loses this battle for me.
Waugh batted at no.4 with some great players to follow. But he consistently had impact scores more than Laxman, evidenced by 3 more 100s in 6 less tests
I agree he didn't consistently go really big though... Or really big at all really. A genuine mark against him. One single 150+ score and it was only 153 as well. A big reason why his average is so much lower than his peers, some of whom he scored tons at the same regular rate as
I can only assume Dean Jones must have been pre "BG trophy"Hard to split tbh

That didn't come in a win though. And Matthews described it as the flattest deck in historyI can only assume Dean Jones must have been pre "BG trophy"
Mark Waugh v Barry Richards IMO.Mark Waugh v Ganguly is a better match up IMO
Waugh wasn't really worldclass in any particular country, even at home, which tells me aside from the impact knocks he didnt dominate enough. Laxman in India averaged over 50 at least and had a couple of series of around 500 runs. But he consistently had impact scores more than Laxman, evidenced by 3 more 100s in 6 less tests

Jeet Raval's 31 at the SCG in 2019/20 imo.Not better than Laxman 167 knock in 1999/00. Go and watch highlights on YouTube if you haven't. Greatest knock by an Indian on Australian soil imo.
