While admittedly Maugh is good, he is one of those overhyped players who you'd assume averages closer to 50 based on the hype he gets.

On the other hand Laxman has performed consistently against the best sides and under critical circumstances.

Laxman edges it for me.

Hard to split tbh

VVS with the superior average, but Junior with the superior rate of hundreds (VVS really didn't get many did he, for 134 tests)

Funnily enough I'd rate Junior's 153* as arguably the second best BG trophy knock after the VVS' 281

Mark Waugh has a lot of quality impact performances but didnt go big or achieve consistency. Laxman to me is somewhat similar though I think he benefited from the 2000s era bump.

Not better than Laxman 167 knock in 1999/00. Go and watch highlights on YouTube if you haven't. Greatest knock by an Indian on Australian soil imo.

The thing I like about that knock was how the spectators and commentators slowly realize how good of a player Laxman is as the innings progresses.

Though Tendulkar's knock in the same series is better, as well as his Perth classic.

I remember watching it live actually but it's been a while. Dean Jones also got the 210 and Sachin the 155, but I dunno, Junior's knock I don't see as clearly worse than those ones. A rare case where he didn't throw it away after reaching 100

Which is where he loses this battle for me.

Tendulkar at Perth in 92 surely has to be up there, or his ton in 99.

Laxman for me. Waugh was always great to watch but Laxman put in some cracking knocks vs Aus, who were the best side for a lot of his career.

But he consistently had impact scores more than Laxman, evidenced by 3 more 100s in 6 less tests

I agree he didn't consistently go really big though... Or really big at all really. A genuine mark against him. One single 150+ score and it was only 153 as well. A big reason why his average is so much lower than his peers, some of whom he scored tons at the same regular rate as

Waugh batted at no.4 with some great players to follow.

Laxman batted largely at no.5 and 6 and had players who barely knew how to hold a bat (especially overseas) and until Dhoni turned up.

It's pretty obvious Waugh would have more 100s.

Waugh either didn't have the mentality for big scores or just didn't care which goes against him and which is why he remains a good players as compared to great.

I can only assume Dean Jones must have been pre "BG trophy"

Waugh wasn't really worldclass in any particular country, even at home, which tells me aside from the impact knocks he didnt dominate enough. Laxman in India averaged over 50 at least and had a couple of series of around 500 runs.

Laxman's my favourite Non-Australian player ever, just loved watching him.
Throughly enjoyed watching his performances in Australia (particularly in Sydney), didn't matter that it was against us at all.
Miles ahead of Waugh IMO, although Waugh gets the nod on fielding between the two.
