I don't have the stats on hand but there was a very eye opening Kurzgesagt video (and my subsequent reading of the papers they used) that outlined exactly how much impact the standard person would make if they went total nature hobo live off kale and snails or something.

The number was zilch.

There's pretty sharp people on this site who I'm sure know already but the "personal responsibility" narrative was spun from BP and the other major energy companies to push the blame from the producer and supplier to the consumer aka the person with the least ability to make bold choices in the supply chain of neccessities. Something like 70% of global emissions are from 100 companies.

My personal view is it's perfectly fine to drive a V8 and be pro-change. I'm sure Cummins drives a very comfortable vehicle that is the best transport option available for him to commute from his home to his commitments, as is his right to do so. What we need to be pushing for is to make the most climate friendly choices easily accessible for everyone and also very effective i.e. you should not be penalised for your time and comfort by making environmentally friendly choices.

Yes this post is just me shilling premium standard public and green personal transport again. Make it good, people will leave their gas guzzler cars.

No one is a bad person or a hypocrite for making their way in the world they're given while advocating for something better.

Cummins is better and I cannot think of an Indian fan who I've discussed this with who disagrees (haven't read the thread).

Bumrah is already a premium quality test bowler but he has so much room for improvement, especially in terms of consistency, new ball bowling and 4th innings intensity. He still has a strong case for being the best after Cummins which shows how insane his talent is.

Mm whilst everyone has been appropriately impressed with Bumrah it feels like he hasn’t gotten the hype I expected, I don’t really follow the shorter formats but maybe he’s not as effective idk. But I thought he would’ve been super hyped being India’s first great pacer but perhaps the spin following is too ingrained.

He is extremely hyped in India. Absolute star in the IPL as well.

I'd still take Kapil ahead of him for longevity and performance but if Bumrah is healthy and plays like this or better for 50+ tests, easily should be India's greatest test bowler.

Yeah idk maybe I’m not as in the loop as I should be but it just came off to me that Tendulkar and Kohli and even Dhoni at certain points were just on a completely different level.

Expecting someone who's environmentally conscious to not own a V8 is nothing like expecting them to go off grid and more like expecting them to not use paper plates.

I agree with you guys but you're simply forgetting that luxury SUVs are ****ing abhorrent and shouldn't exist. The world would be a better place without them. Just colossally wasteful.
Have you been to America, particularly the South/Mid-Atlantic? Some of the "cars" you see going around there make crossover SUVs (which are the standard cars in that part of the world) look positively compact. It's ****ing ludicrous, so many toddlers must get run over by their own parents reversing those behemoths because it's totally impossible to see.

Oh god, don't get me started on American trucks and SUVs. The fact that the Toyota Hilux is considered too small for the American market is batshit. The performance truck niche is just straight up ghastly. Literally the most pointless of all pointless creations. The Chevy Suburban is hateful too.

Well, we've started seeing a few of the smaller (I think? And that's relative) ones around here in Aus. Luckily, it's only utes, thereby restricting the number.

In my most recent trip there, which was earlier this year, I was given an automatic upgrade at the rental car place to a pick-up truck for the lowest car price. I refused and took the Corolla instead.

Oh, btw, it was a hybrid.

the difference between driving a V8 and a 4 cylinder compared to the difference between cutting total transport emissions by half are two totally different scales.

a lot of fossil fuel pollution also has as much to do with vehicle age as engine type. part of NZ's issue at least is we have the oldest average age of car in the OECD.

everyone on this forum does something filthily environmentally hypocritical, and that's fine. what isn't fine is not pushing for a system overhaul. bike lanes that don't rely on drivers never making a mistake, public transport that actually competes on all fronts that help the commuter and mass production of affordable, long range and clean personal vehicles is what we need and why it's good that pat cummins and his V8 ute are speaking out in support of change.

Apparently, utes can talk and hold political positions now. Must be a Kiwi thing.

Also, no-one's forced to own a V8.

Identifying as a ute might get you a leg up in NZ politics if ute-people are underrepresented in parliament and hence an oppressed group

Yeah expected a tighter battle especially as I feel Bumrah seems more complete as a bowler in terms of arsenal of deliveries. Though as mentioned Cummins is more consistent.
Might be that everyone thinks Cummins is slightly better and don’t mind it swinging the other way - but if everyone thinks that you end up with votes like this.

Also very McGrath vs Wasim vibes.

There actually is a ute tax and hence farmers (and tradies) protested against it last year. Farmers are probably underrepresented, but are definitely oppressed.

Anyway, I see Cummins is only 1 test wicket away from 200.
