Always been an absolute workhorse, classy over 80% of the pitch, with absolutely no end product. Found end product and with it resurgent confidence.

No doubt having an actual manager has made a huge difference. Note Joelinton's vast improvement too. Guimaraes really has unlocked everyone around him though, best player we've had in 20 years.

It's such a bad fit. They've packed the squad full of versatile playmakers who operate in the 3 behind the striker, a bit like what Arteta has done. Then they hire a defensive cup specialist?

I'll grudgingly admit that he's been pretty good at Villareal but I've never gotten over the discovery that he had David Silva, Juan Mata, and David Villa in the same team at Valencia and finished 10th.

Perhaps it wasn't just David Silva, Juan Mata, and David Villa... Yes, the players are strong, but the 10th place is not a shame, but also not a humiliation.

Emery is a very dubious figure, but tbf to him I think uppercut is somewhat out with his timings. IIRC Emery only joined Valencia after the 10th placed finish (though he did then preside over a 6th place finish)
