Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

Laxman an interesting one. Specialist #6 if there ever was one. Any team should accommodate him. Even Sobers +3Ws should by making Worrell open.

Went through scorecards of games involving Sobers+3Ws. They always played Collie Smith, Denis Atkinson or John Goddard (last 2 as white captains?). Laxman/KP/Clarke can definitely replace them. WI were extracting some bowling from these players though. I don't know how big a factor was that. Clarke could bowl decently well or was it just against India?

Best player who fails to make at least some XIs - would be a pacer who is not better than WI quartet and also adds little to the batting.

Walsh for my money.

First step would be to identify the worst player of all time to play Tests.

Next step to find the best player who was still worse than that.

Yeah I don't subscribe to that a Hassett can't make that team. All one needs to do is have Walcott or Kanhai keep; have Worrell or Sobers open; or be light on bowling -- he'd always be selected.

afaicr in early 1958 this was technically possible, but Worrell was on a 3-year test break at the time for whatever reason:

Kanhai
Sobers
Weekes
Walcott
Worrell

But even here Kanhai would often keep and one of the MOB five would open -- leaving five spots open at the bottom of the order; even that's space for Collie + Atkinson/Goddard + two of Ramadhin/Gibbs/Gilchrist and a Hassett/KP/Laxman could play over Basil Butcher (who debuted in Nov 1958).

It's not some indomitable side and as such it's easy to fit an ATVG bat in.

Whatever it takes!!!
It really boils down to this:

Is it better to have been the best worst player in the history of the game who will make most XIs or to have been the worst best player in the history of the game who wont make most XIs. Frankly, I think the best worst player in the game to make most XIs is still better but YMMV.
