Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

The Invincibles might actually be the toughest team to crack batting-wise. There were too many below test-standard players in late 50s WI, and I rate Hassett so beating him would be marginally more difficult than Mead/Jardine/Leyland or Martyn.

The answer IMO is therefore Hassett.
does quinton get in on tallon as the far superior batsman or does the argument so run that they were so packed with batting already it's a marginal improvement where as tallon is such a better keeper than quinton he manages to keep him out (quinton is a real good keeper though)

yeah JR Reid a real good bet for the AR. Can keep as well, and bowl both spin (arguably?) and pace lol. Seriously reckon he'd make early 00s Aus as well.

This is the thread that doesn't end
Yes, it goes on and on, my friends
Some people started discussing it not knowing what it was
And they′ll continue fighting it forever just because.......

i think you're right but i don't think it's necessarily inarguable

marto average of 46 in a very batting friendly era batting with one of the best top orders the game has ever seen, qdk 38 in a much more bowler friendly era and behind at times a much shakier top order and neither had much tail support
What about Watling ahead of QDK? Still wouldn't pick him ahead of Martyn though.

I reckon Philander or Ryan Harris. Would bring important runs at 8 for the Windies allowing Marshall to drop to 9, and would make every other attack on bowling alone.
they both get into 00's oz, i would say they replace dizzy (they're better than lee as well but durrrrrr raw pace), harris beats out morkel in vern era SA, vern beats out siddle in harris era AU, they are both good shouts

They might not make 1950s England when they had Trueman, Bedser, Statham, Tyson (don't know how often 3 of them plsyed together) but like the Windies I reckon the batting of Vern and Ryan would get them a gig.

There's no way Philander makes 00s Aus IMO. Gillespir much better in Aus conditions (and all conditions IMO). He could replace Lee sometimes on green pitches but not on a flat wicket

Yeah Evans at 7, Trueman/Laker/occasionally Wardle made that side not as good as it could have been - I reckon Philander/Harris make it. WI, eh...

I reckon Philander would make it, but Ryan Harris definitely would. 3rd best Aussie quick I've seen behind McGrath and Cummins.

I like Ryan Harris. Longevity doesn't count for much in this exercize. Not sure he would always be getting a gig over Croft or Walsh though, even if it only happened a few times that they would be the weak link in the attack. Fitness concerns would likely keep him out of some matches though.

How about Chanderpaul? I don't rate him too highly cos he faffed too much and stayed not out in a weak lineup, but bat him a bit higher in a strong lineup and it won't be a concern, and he obviously walks into all but the strongest units.

Chanderpaul would average 60 if he played for some of these teams. The downhall skiing would be crazy

Is Keith Miller the inverse of this?

Obviously one of the greatest players ever, but his low WPM(despite the great average) means he's never talked about as one of the truly great bowlers. And despite his natural ability as a bat a number 5 who averages 36 would struggle to force out a lot of players.

Would he force himself into an early 80s windies middle order of Kallicharan/Viv/Lloyd/Gomes? Did those sides need a 5th quick? I guess he easily gets in over Gus Logie though, but Gomes was no mug

He creates horrible balance problems picking ATG teams. I think you would find room for him in WIs 80s though. Maybe by dropping a bat and a quick and playing him and a spinner.

He's much too good for this conversation though.

Knott's the inverse IMO

(as we seem to be judging value as a cricketer by how good they were in comparisons to others who performed the same role; generally Watson > Martyn as a player)
