To be fair kane has a reputation for back foot shots, that's what set him apart from the competition when he was a youngster, and he also struggled when Abbott came on, no?Two points
1) Yes goodbye Aaron Finch. Thank you for your services to ODI cricket. Played the game with great respect and you were respected.
2) On the Kiwis ineptitude in their run chase the other night.
The important factor behind our lack of go forward and positivity in batting in Australia was exemplified by Sean Abbots 4 maidens in a row while bowling medium pace 137 kmh cross seamers that didn't deviate off the pitch or in the air.
The issue was he didn't attack the stumps. He bowled short deliveries that were shorter than short of a length. They were quite short waist high deliveries well going over the stumps that we defended time and time again with back foot defences.
Wind back the clock to Merv Hughes bowling to Ken Rutherford of Jeff Crowe or nuffy by international standard bowlers like Abbot two nights ago to Kane or James Hopes circa 2010 or Bracken circa 2008 and its rinse and repeat. Seen this movie before.
All you have to do to bowl a maiden to a Kiwi in Austalia is bowl a hard length and hit the splice of the bat. Even if you are low 130kms like James Hopes or Trimble in the 1980s just bowl short deliveries about waist high on off stump and our batsman have no answers. Are we front foot bullies who can only score of low and slow new zealand pitches?
Either way Martin Crowe has been the only batsman I can remember who was prepared to pull this short rubbish through mid wicket for four runs, then they had to pitch it up to Martin and he could then bring the drive into play.
Until we make a game plan to pull and cut their waist high and rib high deliveries on off stump we will always be inept in Australia.
And the Australian;;s know it.
Game against New Zealand tomorrow lads? Right don't try to bowl fast or seam it Just short deliveries tight on off stump with no width and they won't score more than 180 guaranteed.
To end on a positive note. Really hope we get to see Ben Sears and Fin Allen tomorrow. The only other good outcome would be Guptill getting out for a low score to create questions about him needing to retire.
Good post. I agree, but can't call Bracken circa 2008 a nuffy by international standards. He was probably vying with Malinga as the best ODI seamer in the world (McGrath having retired in 2007).Two points

Kane’s innings was ITSTL. Don’t know if it’s the elbow or mental tiredness (or a misplaced belief that repeated blocking will eventually lead to loose balls to capitalise on) but bowlers increasingly have him on a leash these days.To be fair kane has a reputation for back foot shots, that's what set him apart from the competition when he was a youngster, and he also struggled when Abbott came on, no?
I know fans generally see everything from one point of view and whether they win or lose they like to attribute it mostly to their own team's efforts. but never seen such little credit given to the opposition lolTwo points

Probably suggests the 90's ODI side (the test side not so much) wasn't that bad and this side without Ross and Guptill in decline isn't the greatest. Off-hand, Fleming, Astle, Greatbatch, Cairns, McMillan, Twose, Harris, Nash & maybe Parore would push pretty hard for spots in this line-up. Fleming, Crowe and Rutherford were arguably all more attacking captains too. It’s just bizarre to think that NZ’s greatest ever ODI side is now looking odds on to never win a game in Australia, when some truly awful teams (like any 90’s Nz side) usually managed to pinch at least one.
In the 2010s Ryder scored 700ish runs at 31. Latham, Nicholls and even Neil Broom have a better record in the same period. I know talent wise Ryder was ahead of them but his output didn't match, though probably would've if he wasn't such a **** up.The funny thing is if you were picking NZ from 2010-present day I'd only definitely pick 4 of the current team (Guptill, Williamson, Henry, Boult) with Conway and Neesham possibilities.

Okay, fair enough. He still played that clutch innings vs SA in 2011 WC QF and that fast 100 vs WI when Anderson went nuts in Queenstown so must've struggled in other matches. In the 2010s Ryder scored 700ish runs at 31.
Honestly, I don't have a portal into Kane's mind, but I truly wonder and have a belief that it's this. The intensity of leading his country, preparing as thoroughly as he does, a young family, COVID, tours round the world...as I say I can't do more than guess, but he looks to me to be on a low battery.Kane’s innings was ITSTL. Don’t know if it’s the mental tiredness, but bowlers increasingly have him on a leash these days.
I'd say replace Kane but the only viable alternative (Latham) isn't much better as his track record has shown, and there aren't many regulars who I'd have faith in - unless you suddenly made Conway captain. The other option is southee and knowing nzc that means he's become a ODI xi regular rather than have split captain's.Honestly, I don't have a portal into Kane's mind, but I truly wonder and have a belief that it's this. We can only guess how much support and strength in leadership he gets from Gary Stead, too, and whether he's feeling those burdens above, the burden of us losing form and a coach who might not be the best man for the job.
I’d go for Ferguson over Mills. You can’t have both Henry and Mills needing to be bowled out by over 40.The funny thing is if you were picking NZ from 2010-present day I'd only definitely pick 4 of the current team (Guptill, Williamson, Henry, Boult) with Conway/Mitchell possibilities.
