agreed, my only caveat being a trent boult not playing international cricket might not deserve to walk into a world cup squad on quality anymore. those franchise comps (all of them, every single one) are trash, and the best way to keep a player at their best is with high quality cricket.

he's not going to get that bullying suresh raina with 130kph bouncers like he did earlier this year.
That's fine, and that's up to the selectors/scouts to keep a close eye on him, & if he somewhat comes back to the pack in terms of the top NZ seamers pecking order & his selection becomes genuinely marginal due to form/fitness or rhythm, then he shouldn't be picked.

The good news is Boult is one of the fitness cricketers going around the world, so while I take your point about T20 franchise cricket not always being at the cutting edge, I can't envisage Boult struggling in making that transition back to the 50 over format, or even Tests.

howsies having a lend i reckon.

man, people who are good at sport have it sweet. i wish i could earn 367k in a year.
He is, unfortunately. And I really respect his ability to spot future talent before the rest of us (Joe Walker, Santner, Mitchell etc - OK all from ND, but that's his wheelhouse) but it feels like he's got an axe to grind about female sport and equity of pay, which he is using to insinuate...no he's not even insinuating, he's insisting these guys are giving away contracts because of match fees.

Chapman is probably the most impoved cricketer in nz for the least recognition from selectors. he has improved so much in the longest form of the game. saved the A teams bacon in the past too. should legit be on tours now.

but then daryl mitchell had to have the goat tour of england to crack the team full time (probably).

Under 30 NZ ODI side

Finn Allen
Rachin Ravindra
Will Young (30 in Nov though)
Glenn Phillips
Mark Chapman
Cam Fletcher (wk)
Josh Clarkson
Nathan Smith
Kyle Jamieson
Jacob Duffy/Blair Tickner
Ben Sears
All these guys need more integration with the BC side because the only ones who fill me with any confidence of being able to come straight into the side in case of a retirement or major loss of form are Phillips and Young.

Allen has had some success but still feels rough around the edges, though seems to be progressing well.
Chapman and Ravindra feel like cases of players having not found their feet at international level, but also aren't benefitting for extended runs in the side.
Fletcher is just starting his journey, as is Sears - need more gametime.
Clarkson and Smith haven't debuted yet.
Duffy doesn't seem up to international level but imo could be a serviceable squad player with some coaching. Ditto Tickner who doesn't seem up to chuff against top level teams.

Is the rap on Chapman that he is dodgy against good pace, the short ball or something? I've always felt he was a classy player with a varied game, can bomb it or innovate in T20 and ODI and appears to have the basics of a red ball technique, plus dare I say "ring craft". Seems like someone we could've got more out of.

I remember we looked at Chapman's domestic T20 stats a while ago and his numbers were surprisingly better than G Phillips (and both better than Seifert). He hasn't performed brilliantly when given chances for NZ, though it was an impressive 63 in the India T20 series last November, should've played more T20s and ODIs on the mega-tour NZ were on recently.

Short ball is a genuine issue for him last I saw though.

And ofc he's 28 so too young to play for this NZ anyway.

Yep. @Kippax

If he's going to be successful internationally I think it's going to be as a while ball 5 or 6, and those spots haven't tended to open up much. Even Phillips and Mitchell really should have played more, and that's their thing too. Latham, Neesham and Lord Colin have kind of monopolised those cushier roles a bit (and tbf largely because they've been good at them).

My memory isn't too good but didn't Chapman get better at the short ball, or was that just an assumption I made after he went from a 25 to a 45 averaging red ball batsman with A side tons?

He’s still playing all around the world their champ. Probably making more money than most contracted New Zealand cricketers ?

That's more about keeping Brendon McCullum feeling rebellious and naughty at 40.

Every time I see that pair together they're cooking up a novel way to tip a few starstruck Indian geeks or pasty-faced English windbags upside down and merrily shake them until their pockets have fully emptied.

Shows that if you want to push past the competition and take an NZ spot it helps to be sporting royalty or have an advocate who is.

Seifert - Brendon McCullum sees himself in you
Mitchell - father an All Black coach
