Maybe he got word he wasn't in the plans for the Pakistan tour? I'm not really sure what to make of it really. He could play the 4 rounds of Plunket Shield in October and then go over and play in the BBL, playing all of the available domestic first-class cricket should be enough to be considered for the February England tests, but it's a bit strange.
I'm the same. I don't know anything about the BBL, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to register your interest or at least give some sort of indication you might be available to be drafted. I don't know, but I think Colin has been pretty cheeky, as I originally said. You sign an NZC contract that gives you piece of mind and financial stability - especially at 36 years old - I think you need to value that. Or, if you back yourself to earn domestic league contracts, do what Jimmy did and don't take an international one.
I'm a little bit bemused overall with what's happening, right now. Heath Mills said today
"We’re pretty strong in that a contract needs to be honoured; it’s a two-way street.
”If a player signs a contract, they need to see that through to the end. Our contracts are only one year in length, they’re annual contracts. If we expect New Zealand Cricket and the major associations to honour the contracts then obviously players need to do the same.
Which is quite right. But Trent Boult didn't do that. And now he's talking about how he hopes his Test career isn't over, that he can play in the World Cup(s) etc. To me, it's pretty cut and dry. If you sign an NZC contract, you honour it and you are available for all international and domestic competitions. If you want to 'retire' from a certain format, fine. But your contract reflects that - no matter who you are, your weighting goes down because you are worth less. And you can't pick and choose. If you flat out refuse a contract, then you are not available to be picked. For anything. Because now, Trent will decide what he can play around IPLs, UAE, BBL etc and I just don't like that a bit. He won't play domestic cricket and help to strength those competitions. Why should he be considered for the England Test series but not be willing to go to Pakistan?
I love Trent but when you're being mostly self-serving as an international cricketer, I reckon you're done.
