*Official* South African tour of England and Ireland 2022

They'd named a squad for the first 2 tests hadn't they? I don't think there were any other openers in it.
Precisely this.

Crawley had already been selected. We shall see how things fair for the 3rd test, if I'm honest I think he's got the summer.

lol yeah pretty much

I don't like watching him bowl and think he's been exceedingly lucky so far to end up with the figures he's got. Robinson's far better IMO.
I don't feel strongly about Potts either way, but his action does not spark joy.

Surprised Potts got the axe not Broad. At some point England have to play for the future?

There's inordinate praise around him in the media too. He's a standard English seamer with no real pace or movement about him. He does seem at home bowling long spells which is a good thing generally and will be useful outside of England where they'll be in the field for 150 overs.

No they need to pick the best side and Broasd took the most Wickets and scored the second most runs.

Anyway, bowlers shouldn't be the focus after that shitshow of a batting performance, but as ever hideous batting means dropping a bowler. Foakes, Lees and Crawley should not be there IMHO.

His stamina is all he has really, otherwise he's just another guy. Yet all our really fast bowlers are injured, and TBH looking at Nortje even they don't look so quick.

Yes, foakes, who's been great in the championship for the past 2 years and played multiple crucial knocks needs to be booted out the door 1 match after coming back from injury for..... Billings? Make pope bat 3 and keep? Give johnny the gloves and **** around with his form?

Yes, Foakes whose 'keeping as not been all that at all is averaging 19 in the last 3 years. He needs to be ditched for Bairstow whose good form is always down the order, and he was excellent doing so whilst 'keeping until they decided to bugger about with him. He still averages more as designated ;keeper than not.

Look if Foakes' 'keeping was as brilliant as many suggest I wouldn't be having this convo, I'd have taken a lower average, but it just hasn't been, he really isn't Knott or Bob Taylor.

Give Brook a go.

If Crawley flunks the rest of this series and is still selected for the Winter then I'm giving up. I'll find a different sport to watch.

I'd agree that Robinson is better but as a partisan England fan I have a much more favourable view on Potts.

I think with him you need to take into account that at the start of the England home season he was nowhere near in the reckoning for a Test spot, full Natarajan distance down the pecking order. He only made the squad due to a bright start to the County season and simultaneous injuries to Robinson, Woakes, Wood, Archer, Stone, Mahmood, Fisher, SCurran and I'm probably forgetting more. Being called up in that context he's been way better than could have been expected. By all rights his bowling should have been a major weak link in the side, but I don't think it has been, even if you think his figures flatter him a bit. Obviously he's young enough to hopefully keep improving too.

I think they've played it quite well with Potts. Dropping him for the first test wouldn't have been great from a team building perspective given Robinson was dropped for attitude/fitness reasons and Potts's attitude and fitness have been impeccable (while also taking lots of wickets). But Robinson is the better bowler and it's great that they haven't messed around any longer.
