Windies Team Discussion, and Other Related Things Thread

Finally, some 'A' Team Cricket, West Indies v Bangladesh. 2 x 4 day and 3 x 50 over matches at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground

'Tests':
4-7 August and 10-13 August.

List-A Series:
16th, 18th and 20th August.

These games will be during West Indies games against India and New Zealand, so while we may not see Carty, King etc hopefully it'll give some chances to the likes of Tage Chanderpaul, Athanaze, Louis, McSween etc.
Damn good news to hear. It’ll be a good exposure for both teams.
The Tigers will benefit from this playing in the West Indies…

And a chance for our ‘youngsters’ to make a case for the test team.

Now that another T20 series is over with, we do have some idea on which players are fit for what roles in the team set-up...

1. Lewis (without a doubt, when fit)/King
2. Kyle
3. Hetmyer (when fit)/ some outsider like John Campbell or Leroy Lugg lol
4. Pooran
5. Powell
6. Holder
7. Odean/Romario/Drakes/Keemo
8. Akeal
9. Alzarri
10. Walsh
11. Seales/Obed/Cotterell

If you had to choose between one of shepherd and odean for the #7 slot who would you take?

Yep the T20 side is coming together nicely. I think they will be ok in Australia without really challenging for the title. I'd say Obed is a good deal ahead of Seales and Cotterell, I see him as our gun T20 bowler.

It's our ODI side which is embarresing right now :(

“Okay without challenging for the title”

That’s a high bar for our team

In other news, Cricket West Indies named the inaugurul group of players to benefit from the new academy at Coolidge cricket ground in Antigua. This is low key but important news, as we have a huge issue with developing and giving opportunities to players when they finish Under 19 level. Instead they tend to get left out of our domestic sides in faavour of journeymen and get relegated to club cricket. This is stated reason why Jacob Bethell left the Caribbean, because he was forced to choose head over heart through lack of opportunity. He admitted this in an interview, it was telling.

This academy has been set up to solve that problem. They will train for a year, be included as a side in our 50 over competition and play a touring academy for a few 4 day games. Eventually, they will also play in the 4 day competition. This year it is just men, but it will also include women from next year onwards.

This years players are:

Kevlon Anderson, Keagan Simmons, Kirk McKenzie, Kevin Wickham, Teddy Bishop, Ackeem Auguste, Ramon Simmonds, McKenny Clarke, Johann Layne, Kelvin Pitman, Ashmead Nedd, Joshua Bishop, Nyeem Young, Joshua James, Leonardo Julien

These are a mix of recent under 19 graduates and players from the last two Under 19 batches who have not been given enough opportunities. I was particularly pleased to see Kelvin Pitman there. In our Under 19 trials he was ridiculously rapid (see this vid, 40 seconds in) before he got injured and missed out on the tournament. He has serious pace for a 19 year old and needs to be worked with.

This is definitely good news. I'm hopeful that these guys can elevate their games through the technical aspect. Somehow, being able to make up for what our senior players lack.

Julien is closest to the big stage...Nedd is not far away, but he's got stiff competition in the SLA area.

Julien and Ned are classic examples of talented players not getting opportunities after under 19. Hopefully this will give them a chance to show what they can do.

Various bits of news to catch up on.

The A team series v Bangladesh ended 0-0 with both A tests ruined by rain

Tage scored 48 and 109 retired hurt in his two knocks. His only dismissal was a run out and he faced around 500 balls ?.

Alick Athenaze scored 85 not out and played the most eye catching innings. He is a typical modern West Indian batter at the moment in that he'll play the shot of the day but struggles to put innings together. Hopefully this is the start of big things for him.

Marquino Mindley got 5 wickets and bowled some decent swing and seam.

For Bangladesh A Hassan Saif scored an epic 146 and looked very solid.

Not sure we learned much tbh apart Tage is ready for a go at test cricket but he is going to bore us all to death.

I direct your attention to this Tage innings from earlier this year. He was in beast mode in that chase. Played ramp shots, stand and deliver down the ground…

No wonder ODIS are the windies worst format. They have loads of power player allrounders to suit t20 and grafters to play tests, but very few who can score steadily.

Yep exactly. We have a missing skillset. The likes of Shiv and Sarwan could do both things hence why they were successful international players. We now have feast or famine situation. If you look at a possible test lineup for Australia (assuming Campbell gets banned after his hearing), it is either plodding or vooping. Jason Holder can do either but not that consistently.

Kraigg Braithwaite (captain, the original plodder)
Tage Chanderpaul (new plodder on the block)
Nkrumah Bonner (plodder who's not good against pace)
Kyle Mayers (vooper)
Jermaine Blackwood (vooper)
Jason Holder (can do both)
Joshua Da Silva (wk, plodder with occasional boundary)
Alzarri Joseph (vooper)
Gudakesh Motie (vooper)
Kemar Roach (plodder)
Jayden Seales (vooper)
