In other news, Cricket West Indies named the
inaugurul group of players to benefit from the new academy at Coolidge cricket ground in Antigua. This is low key but important news, as we have a huge issue with developing and giving opportunities to players when they finish Under 19 level. Instead they tend to get left out of our domestic sides in faavour of journeymen and get relegated to club cricket. This is stated reason why Jacob Bethell left the Caribbean, because he was forced to choose head over heart through lack of opportunity. He admitted this in an interview, it was telling.
This academy has been set up to solve that problem. They will train for a year, be included as a side in our 50 over competition and play a touring academy for a few 4 day games. Eventually, they will also play in the 4 day competition. This year it is just men, but it will also include women from next year onwards.
This years players are:
Kevlon Anderson, Keagan Simmons, Kirk McKenzie, Kevin Wickham, Teddy Bishop, Ackeem Auguste, Ramon Simmonds, McKenny Clarke, Johann Layne, Kelvin Pitman, Ashmead Nedd, Joshua Bishop, Nyeem Young, Joshua James, Leonardo Julien
These are a mix of recent under 19 graduates and players from the last two Under 19 batches who have not been given enough opportunities. I was particularly pleased to see Kelvin Pitman there. In our Under 19 trials he was ridiculously rapid (see
this vid, 40 seconds in) before he got injured and missed out on the tournament. He has serious pace for a 19 year old and needs to be worked with.
