I was thinking before that Nicholls is kind of the bane of Young's NZ career - even back when Nicholls first started playing for NZ it was a surprise to many that he was picked over Young (who had a good domestic record but whose main problem then was converting fifties to hundreds). Nicholls took that spot at five for the next what, five years, and now Taylor's gone there are other contenders. And with his decline in form, I would still see Nicholls as the main guy keeping Young from a preferred spot in the middle order. (That and the shortage of NZ opening batsmen, of course).

Yup can't remember Nicholls dominating first class cricket to make the black caps side. He did have a good NZ A series vs south Africa i think. The story goes, Young went to UK to play club cricket during our winter and nzc included Nicholls in the winter training squad in Young's place. He surprised the coaches at the training by playing quite well and they gave him a go at NZ A. Nicholls made the black caps under Baz which helped. He wasn't scoring lots early on but Baz and hesson persisted. Rest is history. Bit like Macewell story.

That was in Root's bread basket. Doesn't mean he would have grabbed it, he's dropped easy ones already this series. Daz is taking over Nicholls luck.

Can't help but think Foakes's genius skills as a keeper, rather like rumours of Mark Twain's death, have been greatly exaggerated.

Nicholls debuted at test level in Baz's last series against Oz (Taylor was injured). Then when Taylor returned McCullum had retired, so there was a spot at no 5. Nicholls scored some gutsy runs in South Africa and then secured his spot

Young opening reminds me of the Bracewell days where you pick your best 5/6 batsmen and play them anywhere, regardless of their experience in that position.

Since we gave up on Raval (and sometimes I wonder if we should've) we've tried Blundell, Conway and now Young as openers.

Obviously Young is a middle order batsman and he looks a million bucks at times. I think it's harsh to judge him on his performances in a role he's not used to. I guess Larsen, stead and co just hope he'll adapt and they won't have to face hard facts like there's not really any openers knocking the door down domestically and that their other specialist opener is have a really **** time of it vs the traditionally strong nations.

It's kind of galling that there are some players who get a lot of rope, and then there's guys like Patel and Wagner who can take 10 wickets in an innings or be the guy to extract something out of nothing and still not get a consistent run.
