Seen it suggested we go with two spinners, why the **** not, they're less likely to be injured, Pick Abell to give us some seam cover, job done.

Tim Whigmore in the Telegraph claims Pope at 3, Bairstow at 5, and Potts to debut. If Branderson and Leach are the other bowlers that's quite a long tail.
Oh gawd, you don't think they're going to go with 5 seamers again, if they do, I'm willing to say in the immortal words of the Who Here’s to the new boss, same as the old boss", are we going to be fooled again.

Really disappointed they've left out Parkinson. Hope Brook and Potts play. On current form you'd think Broad should miss out, but then on current form Crawley would be playing for Shoeburyness fourth XI.

I really just would've picked the best number three available. I know Pope's scored some runs this season, but any outside of the Oval?

If I was being bold, I'd have gone with: Duckett, Haines, Hain, Root, Brook, Stokes, Foakes, Broad, Anderson, Parkinson, Potts.

This comes with the proviso that I've never seen him bat, but Potts's record suggests he's not quite an abject bunny; FC average a tick over 17, couple of 50s.

If COverton misses out I reckon he'll bat 8, which is maybe a spot too high, but I hope if he's considered one of the best three available seamers we won't fudge it because of his batting.

Squad definitely not quite the revolution one was hoping for; has 8 of the XI who had their arses handed to them in the third test v the Windies and the other three (Woakes, Lawrence and Mahmood) are all broken.

Pretty happy if Pope bats 3, how it works that you can be completely bereft of runs at 5-6 then get a promotion is a bit beyond me, even if you have scored FC runs that you were never short of in the first place. And Crawley is talented, but is not a Test opener.

From the squad picked:

Lees
Crawley
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Bairstow
Overton
Potts
Leach
Anderson/Broad

Brook and Potts should both play. Bairstow just edges out Foakes. I’ve got next to no confidence in Overton as a Test cricketer, but he’s the only viable #8 selected.

Potts may be a nine but Stokes just needs to tell Broad to bat properly. Overton's 20 extra runs t best aren't worth it.

17 average in county cricket is pretty poor though. Generally "bowlers who can bat a bit" at international level like Graeme Swann, Andy Bichel, Gareth Batty, Dominic Cork etc. were averaging 25-30 in county.

Yeah, 17 at FC level is mud.

Which led me to find out that Tim Southee averages 16 at FC level - granted he doesn't play a lot, but that is so poor for someone who could have been so much better.
