England players and selection discussion thread

Whatever it takes!!!
the comparisons with KP might be ironic but i don't think there is evidence A&B piss off every teammate they have for more than three weeks, unlike KP
Not true at all, I think. Many of his English team mates like him... Post that RSA tour is a different story when it seems the dressing room was divided but I am pretty sure I saw many guys support him before. And they love him in his franchise T20 sides.

Honestly, on the field, based on what I see of A&B, I will be surprised if they have not pissed off their team mates three times a week anyways.

yeah i deliberately avoided this cos it's a temporary environment

You might be right that the two are more annoying than I give them credit for tho. Can see that Broad sees every new bowler that comes into the side as a threat.
It would be nice if at least one of those bowlers would show some evidence of that.

I doubt either of them are that bad, but the kind of issue suggested - veteran players who were part of a very strong side being arrogant and abrasive with a younger generation - is a pattern that’s been seen many times before. Australia post 2007-8 is an example.

Robinson, Woakes, Stone and Archer exist. Smaller sample size for 3 of them but they've not been worse than Broad. Hard to show evidence when it's difficult to fit in new promising talent so easily since team balance is a problem.

That's interesting I'd never heard that, who were the Aus "abrasive" players at that time? Symonds? Clarke? Most others would have been gone after 2008

Selection is always up to the selectors and no one should assume selection, but I would imagine Broad (in particular because he’s a nob) and Anderson are resentful of inferior players being selected ahead of them for no good reason. Ever since they tried to get clever with managing workloads there’s been more injuries than ever.

Players don’t manage workloads

They want to play

Katich, grabbed Clarke by the throat for not singing the team song. And his reaction after being dropped was far worse than Anderson and Broad (though in both cases they had a point). Wrote in haste but meant “post 2007/08” to mean roughly 2008-2011.

Time up for both Jimmy and Broad..I mean if not now when? 40+

If all fit England have a good new gen bowling line up of Archer, Mahmood, Wood/Robinson. The big miss is a world class spinner.

Archer - one good series to date and massive injury concerns.

Mahmood - way too early to tell. looked ok.

Wood - injuries. ineffective in England.

Robinson - this guy is the one. tall, bowls a great nagging line and length and moves it just enough. if england can get through to him and get his fitness in a better place then yeah he will be a handful for batsmen.

Stone could be an absolute gun but injuries will likely ruin that too.

tldr there isn't anywhere near enough bowling talent available to justify binning broad and anderson on cricketing terms alone.

I'll admit to a personal bias here but I really don't think it is a part of my thinking when I say that I find it incredible that Sam Cook didn't go to the West Indies and indeed rarely gets a mention in these discussions. If Broad and Anderson are being picked then it's relative non-issue compared to England's batting woes. I don't really understand, though, why he isn't one of the first names mentioned if they're not being picked, especially after the success of Robinson's selection last summer.

Robinson isn't express but bowls accurately and moves the ball just enough, as ImpatientLime says above. It was noted last summer after his debut that despite county cricket's current reputation, picking players with great county records actually does work sometimes after all. The description of Robinson also applies extremely well to Cook, excepting that he is if anything even more economical, slightly quicker and with a better fitness record, albeit an inch or two shorter and a worse batsman.

I didn't and don't agree with the decision to drop Broad and Anderson but if you're going to do that then I struggle to see an argument that Cook isn't in the top three remaining quicks in the country. In fact you could make an argument, at the very least, that he's in the top one (IMO).

I like the look of Cook too. Definitely worth a go in England and has an outstanding FC record. I’d also keep Fisher around the squad. If Carse and Garton get over their injury issues, they should be in the conversation - especially as we’re looking for a point of difference (fast and/or left-arm).

If we’re set on moving on from Broad and Anderson, we need to give these players a fair crack.

Spin-wise, I’m keeping an eye on Patterson-White at Notts. Seems a good all-round prospect.

They posted a compilation of some declaration bowling and it was absolutely humiliating. Like sure they're not trying to bowl well but that's part of the problem. If this was happening in the Shield, let alone someone involved decided to advertise it, I would be livid.

English cricket is dead
Wasn't there a shield player who was doing an impersonation of bumrah recently when the game was heading for a draw?
