Watched a bit of Johnson's innings yesterday (bits and pieces) and some of the highlights of the rest of it this morning. Looks a decently compiled ton and he's certainly starting to put together a decent FC record. Must have been gutting for him to get stranded just shy of a double, but at least McPeake and Sneddon weren't Southeeing, and Newton getting caught on the boundary is forgivable when you've got 70! And it was a pretty clean hit when he was dismissed.

Similar innings for Canterbury/McConchie.

Ripper from Ravindra today to dismiss Rippon.

N Smith looking good bowling around the wicket to LHers.

Glenn Phillips moving to Otago next year is an interesting one.

If it is motivated by cricketing reasons , then I wonder if it is a bowling motivation? Not that he doesn't get reasonable numbers of overs for Auckland, but they are stacked with specialist spinners.

I don't think it's comparable to the Super 12 expansion and further professionalisation, which actually strengthened players bond to their real province. Rather than play for BOP (or Counties/Northland when they were involved), then the Chiefs, then migrate to Chiefs HQ in Hamilton to cut down travel and play for Waikato, it became the norm to play for BOP then travel to Otago for the Highlanders.

1996-2007 or whenever it was, was disgustingly uncompetitive between the Super Rugby base provinces and the rest. I'm glad Super Rugby becoming even more plastic and contrived accidentally encouraged more provincial loyalty.
I'm talking about the rest and reconditioning, or whatever it was. Basically the central body interfering in the selections of the pro teams.

I didn't really appreciate it at the time, I thought people were getting knickers in a twist over a minor thing for the greater good. But ..... in hindsight...

It is hard to seperate the cause and effects of the decline , as it became a permanent thing after the expansion. But the expansion was also **** in of itself. And got worse. Plus player drain. Etc etc.

I'd say sub-All Black rugby started its death in 2007. It's amazing the lack of cultural grab rugby has now in NZ. I've never seen a decline like it

Spectacular effort by Sneddon to run out Dale Phillips. Cumming unbeaten on 22 another solid effort by a rookie in that game (was going to say debutant but this is actually his second first class game).

Interesting article.

I don't make it 14 FC A Games by NZ A in the time frame that the article uses, but 13.

However there was a match that was 'misc' status rather FC status v West Indians.

2017/18India Aaway2 x FC
2018/19India Ahome2 x FC
2018/19Pakistan Aaway (UAE)2 x FC
2019/20India Ahome2 x FC
2020/21West Indianshome1 x FC
2020/21West Indies Ahome2 x FC
2020/21Pakistan Ahome2 x FC

Ah, there was also a FC game by NZ v touring England in 2019. Which I missed above. So, 14 is correct

Edit. No, a Pakistan A game was cancelled due to covid issues, so back to 13.

2017/18India Aaway2 x FC
2018/19India Ahome2 x FC
2018/19Pakistan Aaway (UAE)2 x FC
2019/20Englandershome1 x FC
2019/20India Ahome2 x FC
2020/21West Indianshome1 x FC
2020/21West Indies Ahome2 x FC
2020/21Pakistan Ahome2 x FC

10 home matches, 4 away.
I'll give them a pass due to covid interruptions. In fact covid probably resulted in an unexpected bonus of 5 homes games in 2020/21. They'd probably not planned any of those and may have been a planned away year.

A lot more guys seem to be swinging the ball both ways of late. A consequence of the dookaburra, or the results of Anderson’s enduring success influencing coaching priorities?

I always found the Kooka to be easier to swing both ways than the Duke, especially when the Duke was going around corners. Subtle, but easier. So I'd imagine the latter?

What do we know about this Foulkes kid from Canterbury? I’m pretty sure I saw he opened a few weeks ago and he looks like a genuine third seamer type.

Can’t remember seeing him play for NZ under 19’s so what’s the go

I think he's that unlucky age, He would have been 17 last U19s world cup and just missing out on age this time by a few months (if we hadn't pulled out).

Although it is interesting. Now with Foulkes, Vishvaka, Tim Robinson, W Clark. 4 players who didn't make the previous U19s (although Vishvaka and Clark did get some lead up games) have made provincials already.

Of that U19s squad I count 6 have made provincials; Ashok, Keane, K Clarke, Wheeler-Greenall, Field, O'Rourke.

When I started this post I thought it was going to be about 2 even lists, or maybe more in the first .....

I'm guessing it is a lifestyle change. He's real close with his brother. Potentially Otago will have Dean Foxcroft returning. Very handy to have a couple of spinners in the top order of a limited-overs batting line-up. The Volts might win a few more games.

Interesting
I think NZC is making it sound like they cut the first class games to accommodate NZ A games which is not true. NZ A just happened, covid helped and so did India. India is big on their A programme and on one of the tours had a chance to speak to the then coach Rahul Dravid who was of the opinion the NZ A side is probably the best A side going around and wanted to play more frequently vs NZ A. Also the conditions in NZ offer the India A good challenges.

As for the statement NZC picks players for future, that is very incorrect. Other than maybe Rachin Ravindra and Kyle Jamieson that is not true. They have consistently picked Bennett, Astle, Rutherford, Doug Bracewell and good number of older players. Nothing wrong with that but making it sound like we pick lot of youngsters is not correct. Ben Sears, Nathan Smith may have had a go here and there but we consistently pick the guys that have represented black caps.
