Decent game for Kieran McComb for Wellington A. 6-52 in the 2nd innings and 1-37 in the first. Not bad from Brett Johnson either (3-28 & 2-38)

Of course, no chance of them getting a bowl for Wellington as they're both spinners, but hey, great to have them blocking a quick bowler for the As.

Or maybe not, technically.

Cant actually find anything about needing to play cricket within the association boundary, to be eligible.

The eligibility rules are mostly just about overseas players.

Only rule is cant play for 2 teams in same season without permission of NZc.

The other option would have been to promote Cam Jackson or Benji Culhane.

Both played for Otago A against Canterbury A in a three day game at Sunnyvale this week.

Ebrahim said they were promising talents but neither was ready for first-class cricket yet.

The step up from provincial A cricket to playing in a Plunket Shield fixture against a strong Auckland side in tough conditions at Molyneux Park was too big, he said.

He felt it was in the best interests of their development to play in the Otago A game instead, so he made the decision to bring in a loan player.

Ebrahim added it was also about a team philosophy to field the strongest possible team
Pretty weak excuse IMO.

What if Chu pulls a hammy before next game, and Ave is actually playing for CD (as Ckeaver called up) that week? Draft in Pomare?

Also article doesnt address why not using proven steadyish forner FC player Tasnan-Jones.

Yeah, not a fan at all of what Otago did there, nor the half ass excuse as to why. New Zealand cricket should’ve said no.

It’s going back over a decade but we had two young guys at the time. Shane Gadson and Owen Ivins who in back to back seasons played first class cricket as 17 and 18 year old wicket keepers and neither were good enough at the time. But they were the best we had at the time.

Poor from Otago

He's never been a real wk at club level (he opens, captains, takes 10-20 club wickets a season with mediums). Llew Johnson does wk regularly for another club.

Right.

He did keep for Otago A in at least one match this season according to scorecard, hence why I include him as an ignored local replacement permutation. But, I didn't check whether it was just a T20(s), or keeping for longer match.

Howsie really thought ND had too much pride to get in on the action.

The Otago Daily Times understands the country’s largest cricket association, Northern Districts, will lean on the loan player system and name Wellington keeper Lauchlan Johns in its side for the match against Auckland in Whangarei beginning tomorrow.

Otago fielded loan keeper Ma’ara Ave last week and the move sparked some rich debate in the province. Some felt Otago, the smallest of the six major associations, should have blooded a development player instead.

It appears the system, though, is set to be used more often as New Zealand Cricket looks for ways to keep the country’s best players active and engaged rather than idle on the sideline.

Pathetic.

Seems like a rugby super 12 2007 moment . Except nobody cares already tbh. Integrity of the comp has gone.

As for the specifics on Johns drafted for ND . I'll be interested to see what has ruled out both Bocock and Pomare. Before getting into the others ....

I probably wouldn't mind someone like Pringle becoming a loaned player, if his heart really is in Bay of Plenty, didn't want any tag of disloyalty to his name.

But bringing in older journeyman names, probably just on the basis Pomare's yet to set an ND A game alight with the bat, also prone to some shabby reading of Ashok in the NZ U19 days, it does seem a bit soulless and contrived.

I don't think it's comparable to the Super 12 expansion and further professionalisation, which actually strengthened players bond to their real province. Rather than play for BOP (or Counties/Northland when they were involved), then the Chiefs, then migrate to Chiefs HQ in Hamilton to cut down travel and play for Waikato, it became the norm to play for BOP then travel to Otago for the Highlanders.

1996-2007 or whenever it was, was disgustingly uncompetitive between the Super Rugby base provinces and the rest. I'm glad Super Rugby becoming even more plastic and contrived accidentally encouraged more provincial loyalty.

Looks like the Volts have started recruiting early.

That's excellent for Otago. With Dale already in the side he'll probably fit in well. Obviously much cheaper houses than Auckland so he can buy up (200K for IPL, plus $ for NZ, and the 100).

ND did put the team out with Johns in it, then they deleted the tweet!

Other news:
Vishvaka or Robinson are Wgtn's chances to make a first-class debut.
Takapuna seamer Jordan Sussex a new name for Auckland. Will Clark and Todd Watson new faces for CD. Leopard in for Clarkson. No Henry, Nuttall or Shipley for Canterbury; O'Rourke in the mix to play.
Jamieson, Nicholls and Wagner turning out.
