Usually it says cancelled on CricHQ if cancelled, and I thought I'd seen a Twitter post that said "play is now underway" - though I guess that could have been a one-dayer instead. Shame if it was cancelled, but I guess the timing was just as the Omicron outbreak was coming in. Would have been good to see some of the Wellington hopefuls compete in a 3-dayer.

Yeah it's not just the name on the card looking right, it's a pic as well.
Looks like he's played more of a starring role as a bowler in his first two weeks of Dunedin club cricket. Average of 6.2 from five knocks at No. 4. 13 wickets @ 9.6 (ER 3.6) with the ball.

IIRC he made a ton against a real minnow but couldn't buy a run against anyone else. I remember the accusations of nepotism etc on here at the time.

Yeah he's actually the most capped NZ U19 player ever (18 Youth ODIs).
Zohrab's been a bit of a flop, and Vishvaka has a few frailties of his own that will show as the bowling gets quicker and shorter, but he's certainly gone on to crack more tons at domestic A level than White has in the last couple of years.

If work wasn't so busy I would be tempted to head down to watch that at Alex Moore Park. Good to see some of the current under 19 players Jackson and Heaphy turning out for the A sides.

I think Bond, Waddle and Coney reelected correctly about our state of affairs with spin bowling. Agreed with everything they said bar one ie still wanting the spinners to do the holding role. I think the last to try that was Ravindra bowling like 25 or 30 overs and going for 60 runs or something vs Bangladesh. The result, he was out of the squad for the rest of the season. Still they insist our spinners should be bowling tight rather than attack. It doesn't make sense.Interesting chat with Shane Bond on the state of the bowling stocks.

The conditions we're rolling out even towards the end of the summer is not helping spinners. Ajaz the 10 wicket man didn't even pick a wicket in a first class game. Go figure.
I don't think our spinning stock will improve unless there's a massive change in mindset of our captains at all levels, change in decks and having the patience with the spinners. Too much to ask for. The onus is entirely on an individual to find ways to change this. I think it will over the time but it will take an outlier to do it.

Need to go back to 10 rounds Plunket shield asap. The reduction to 8 was supposed to be temporary until the hockey curve graph of ICC money started to come in more at the end of the 8 year TV deal. We are at about that time now. Will any media ever ask about this? Nope.
Ajaz Patel, as Howsie pointed out once, had a bit of a reputation as a declaration bowler on the circuit. Got flattered stats from some reasonably meaningless 3rd innings efforts. But heck he bowled a lot of overs doing that, along with the times he got to bowl in more meaningful situations.
10 rounds, drier decks. Need to back to 2010ish. Like why on earth did they ever move away from the domestic structure and conditions that produced our current generation???? They got payback from sorting out the domestic pitch WOF situation with a good team within about 7 years, great team about 10 years, ditched it after about 12 years, the great team have managed to keep rolling on the foundations built and become world champions about 15 years after the domestics sort out. But David White and co know better, have pulled the ladder up on the next generation (who weren't going to be as good anyway), sent them back to 1990s style domestic cricket.

I think Bond's point about spinners bowling tight was about the relentlessness of Lyon / Ashwin / Jadeja, very few loose balls compared to Santner (who I think he said still rates as a possible test spinner, but needs more FC bowling).
The last time NZ played a test spinner with a "license to attack" was Sodhi, and I don't recall him taking many key 3rd 4th innings wickets. Before that Mark Craig perhaps, bowling an attacking line outside off (compared to Somerville's straighter line), and yes Craig did have some match winning spells.

Nathan Lyon bowls like 11 overs per wicket. He bowled a lot of overs for his wickets. Besides he was played in all conditions unlike us. Even Ashwin bowls like 9 overs per wicket. Jadeja about 10 overs per wicket. All of them bowl lots of overs.
Our guys don't even bowl as many overs in first class. Spinners aren't picked consistently either, point in case Ajaz.
Bottom line, our captains, culture and the management is hopeless when it comes to managing spin. Someone like Vettori did things differently and reaped the rewards. When Vettori made the side most spinners used to bowl a bit slower through the air and rely on flight to get wickets. Vettori figured he couldn't do that to be effective in NZ (those days the decks were slightly better for spinners barring maybe one or two series) and relied on getting guys out lbw or bowled. We need a bowler that can think outside of the box and bowl differently but effectively. I won't say it is not possible but it will take thinking outside the box to be able to change the mindset of our management.
I think Australia, India and to a certain extent South Africa have a good bowling balance.
