Ave playing for CD'A" in match finishing yesterday, in Otago Volts 12 for a match starting today?

No Chu.

Has he moved to Dunedin?

Ah.

*Ma’ara Ave (Central Districts) has been included in the squad as a Loan Player and Covid replacement for players isolating.

But match is in Alexandra? Not in CD backyard, like Hastings where the 'A' match was being played.

And Renwick can keep, and in Otago squad.

Obviously I don't know the ins and outs. Who is covid impacted and who isn't. Also, I don't want to crap on Ave's parade if he is moving to Dunedin next year or something like that.

But with Kitchen and Broom gone next year, I would have hoped that Otago would be trying to get a bit of match experience into Parkes and/or Wheeler-Greenall. Having Renwick keep, and one of these 2 bat would seem an opportunity to do this. They even have opening bat cover (for Renwick) already in that 11 with Rutherford and Cumming.

So, unless there are covid reasons with un-used players in Dunedin. Seems very weird to fly a loan player from Hastings to Alexandra.

It is strange. I'd like to think there is a logical covid reasoned explanation. Or even a recruitment ploy.

But my contempt for NZC's attention to detail also extends to some of the provinces, so I do wonder if it is just 'can't-be-arsery'. This option maybe required less phone calls for someone. So, job done.

For Otago A this year. Tasman-Jones, Renwick and a youngster called Cam Jackson have been the keepers.

Benji Culhane, extremely promising, the keeper in the Otago U19s.

Scott Johnston making his first-class debut for ND. Sodhi batting at 7.

Hay looks to still be injured for CD. Ross out for being a household contact, but he'll be playing a couple of warmup games vs the Netherlands.

Simon Keene inexplicably left out for Auckland. No Guptill, but there is Jamieson.

The Ave thing is super weird. Led to a situation where Curtis Heaphy kept for both ND and CD A despite being CD's third-choice keeper in that lineup. It was a close game for that; plenty of runs for Christian Leopard.

Ave's the first player to play PS for two teams in a season BTW.

Hampton filled in for Canterbury in a PS game a few season's ago, perhaps also played for ND same season?

Bert Sutcliffe may have played for 2 provinces in a season, but perhaps one for PS and one against a touring international side?

I will dive into NZC archive site later.

The 2021 Cricket Almanack (pg. 352) says that it has happened 4 times (Sutcliffe twice), but none of them both in province v province.

So with 12 players gone, what will be the team to take up the Dutch?

I assume below names will be there. Who will be the rest?

Latham

Taylor
Young
-
Blundell
Jamieson
Henry

Guptill, Nicholls and likely Cam fletcher instead of Blundell. Ajaz patel one of the spinners. Maybe Doug bracewell as an all rounder.

I assume a 14 player squad with 2 from Napier T20I (Fri 25th) and perhaps Mount ODI (Tues 29th) being replaced by 2 others for Hamilton ODIs (Sat 2nd, Mon 4th).

Macewell and Sears in the NZ XI warmup games is a clue. Perhaps also Clarkson and Cleaver, but they are CD players so "home" ground for them. So perhaps:

Guptill
Young
M Bracewell (T20I + 1st ODI) / Nicholls (2nd 3rd ODI)
Taylor
Chapman
Latham +
Clarkson (T20I) / de Grandhomme (3 ODI)
Ravindra
Smith (or D Bracewell is Smith not fit to bowl)
Henry
Jamieson
Sears
Duffy
Sodhi

Macewell 6th bowling option in T20I.

de Grandhomme 6th bowling option in ODI. 2 bowling all-rounders (Smith + Ravindra), 3 specialist bowlers.

Possibly a 15th player for keeper cover / Black Caps squad experience, Cleaver T20I+ 1st ODI and Fletcher 2nd + 3rd ODI.

Unlucky: Worker (Nicholls has done just enough to keep ODI opener slot), Patel (spins it the same way as Ravindra/Santner)

Long shots? Shipley (unfortunate injury timing), Walker (spins it the other way to Ravindra/Santner), Ashok (potential star). But not this time.

Michael Bracewell is just there as the experienced guy to captain I suspect. Solid player but has only really made a case in T20.

Worker should be in the squad and in the side. There are a few guys in his situation tbh - with Taylor retired there's only so long Guptill, Nicholls and Latham salvaging their positions can continue without NZ surveying their options.

Please tell me we are playing some ODIs in England this winter?

I think Bracewell is an outside chance of making the ODI World Cup 2023 squad to India.

NZC stated he was unavailable for T20I trip to Bangladesh when announcing the teams, so I assume would have gone if not for baby.

If NZ stick with the usual ODI XI of 4 batters, Latham #5, 3 allrounders + 3 bowlers, then on Indian pitches Bracewell could be an option for batting all-rounder ahead of Mitchell (previously de Grandhomme's spot), also gives a better mix of spinners if they want someone to turn the ball away from left-hand batters in middle overs (assumes other spinners are Santner + Sodhi / Ravindra). And Bracewell more likely to make 40 (30) than McConchie who is the other option for off-spin all-rounder.

Might depend on how Phillips develops as a spinner.

Forgot Ish is not in the IPL. CDG also available.

I'm guessing we won't see much changes then. Most likely squad for ODIs (can't be bothered about a single T20 game)

Worker
Guptill
Nicholls
Chapman/Worker
Taylor
Latham (WK)
CDG (Prefer someone like Nathan Smith)
D Bracewell (or Ravindra)
Jamieson
Henry
Sodhi

Hope they don't pick older players and use this opportunity to try out couple of new faces or three. I guess they won't risk it as our summer results have not been great. I hope they keep in mind the world cup next year is in India.

As for T20s hope they pick players that they think can make the t20 WC squad to Aussie. No point in picking guys like Ravindra, Cleaver, Cam Fletcher etc when they will most likely not feature in the t20 WC.
