dunno if it's just availability heuristic, and this is sort of related to that point by @Bijed somewhere else about 50s-100s, but to my mind it feels as if ravi j has had so many *impactful* 50s

obviously this is a huge score he's got over the past two days here but just speaking generally, sure it's only his what, second ton? but he has played so many more *impactful* innings that aren't reflected in the raw count of tons imho

Jadeja gets his rightful position in the rare breed of cricketers @ sub-25 with the ball and 35+ with the bat.

Only Imran has scored more runs and taken more wickets than him at a better average.

From Cricinfo here: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...indra-jadeja-the-sting-in-indias-tail-1303837

"In terms of overall numbers, Jadeja has been one of the key batters for India in the last five years: he has scored 1441 runs at an average of 46.48. With a cut-off as low as 300 runs scored by any batter in this period, only Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli average higher. Naturally, for someone batting at No. 6 and 7 largely, the average is expected to get a boost because of a higher number of unbeaten innings. What stands out in Jadeja's case, however, is the number of fifty-plus scores he has made batting largely with the lower order. In 43 innings, he has crossed 50 on 14 occasions - once every 3.07 innings on average. That's just a fraction lower than how frequently Rohit (13 in 39 innings) and Kohli (25 in 75 innings) have managed in the last-five years."

Won't copy over the rest of the stats being shown, so I'd recommend reading the article (worth it IMO).

That's cos it's true. His rise as a bat began probably some time around 2016 and for a while we were still good with the middle order (especially at home) through till the collapse/decline of the 3 in the middle which was some time around 2019. Since then we've struggled to even put good scores on at home for the most part, nevermind away. 300 is dreamland.

He usually comes in with the team at a precarious position, and rescues it to at least a defendable score - especially since that cut off of 2019/2020.

If Ashwin isn't around, then we're batting with 3-4 10s or 11s below Jadeja. Or he's sometimes sent in as high as 5/6 - which speaks to the troubles of the Indian batting unit.

Interestingly, it seems it's either/or with Ashwin/Jadeja. This was their first century partnership, and only second 50+ (before they hit the 100). Pant seems to be his partner of choice.

The whole "our batting line up starts with Pant and ends with Ashwin" started as a joke, but it's turned into some wicked reality.

Here's a list of his 50+ scores in the last couple of years, and the point at which he came in:
175* India vs Sri Lanka 2022, 1st innings, in at 228/5 - this is probably the most comfortable he's come in at in recent years, and even then it's not particularly great! Top scorer
50 India vs New Zealand 2021, 1st innings, in at 145/4 - along with Shreyas Iyer took us to a far more comfortable 266/5 when Jadeja fell.
56 England vs India 2021, 1st innings, in at 145/5 - fell at 232/8. It's a game we drew, but were in a sticky spot there. Second highest scorer.
57 Australia vs India 2020, 1st innings, in at 173/5 - fell at 306/7. Another game we drew but a crucial innings. Second highest scorer.

On top of that there are a few not completely unimportant 30s and 40s that aren't reflected in the "50+" stats where he had a similar impact but didn't hit the milestone - e.g. the Lords test where he came in at 282/5. There was another one in the England series where he came in and only scored like 20 or something but he hung in there when we were in really bad spot - didn't trouble the scorecard much, but it stopped a flurry of wickets as I think the 3 idiots had just gone off in the space of a couple of overs.
Admittedly that's a low bar, but again, bear in mind that if Ashwin (or Axar or Lord - especially since the latter 2 aren't guarantees anyway and Ashwin's inclusion depends on home/away/other factors) aren't in the team, the kind of lineup that follows Jadeja is something like Shami, Ishant, Bumrah, Siraj or similar.
I have no problem specifically with that lower order, the problem, as it has been for a couple of years-plus now, is that our top order aren't firing. If we are in a comfortable enough position if someone in the top order scores a hundred and another one gets a 50+ with a couple of other contributions we probably see Jadeja coming in at almost 300/5 every other game. As we did when Kohli and one of the other 2 idiots was contributing. That's changed massively - and our openers have been good for the most part, but only to the point that we aren't 20/2 every game. They're (generally) not putting on HUGE runs - it's a good enough job (with the caveat that batting is tough everywhere).

I do feel like he's left a few runs on the table - based on his domestic record he clearly has the ability to score even more than he has especially turning some of these 50s into 100s at the very least. But I guess that's part of his late renaissance and maybe being more attuned to being a #8 or #7 at best but being asked to come in at 5/6 at times as well where he hasn't quite figured that part out.
