CW's Ranking of Spinners (Tests)

This is a tough one. I'm torn between three names

Chandra - India's first real overseas spin weapon. Some great performances, especially put into context with the strength of the Indian side at the time and the conditions he played him. Lots of fun to watch too, wicked fast arm and lots of revs. Would have been a nightmare to face on modern-day Indian tracks

Lyon - living legend of the game IMO. Great career and longevity, lots of really solid performances, plenty of cricket ahead of him too. Some holes in his career, specifically 4th innings performances and bowling in Asia, but he ticks a lot of boxes.

Swann - extremely underrated, but has fantastic figures bowling offspin in one of the toughest eras for a spin bowler, and generally in some really unfavorable conditions for spinners. Not a long career in terms of years but he does have more wickets then Benaud and good performances everywhere in the world except Australia. On the flip side - he benefitted from DRS in a way guys like Ramadhin did not.

400 wickets club and a 11 year long career for an offie from a land that hates them. He's a HOFer for sure. Would even rank him above Jadeja atm, such are the weight of his accomplishments. He's got holes in his record, no denying that, but he's also achieved something only 14 other men have.

Is Lyon even the next best Aussie spinner though? I'd put Trumble and MacGill ahead of him.
Lyon is probably Australia’s greatest classic off-spinner, with the only other contenders being Ian Johnson and Ashley Mallett (I think).

You could get into a debate and argue a case for Trumble and Noble being off-spinners, but let’s not go there.

Anyway, Lyon is an interesting case because the ‘sum of his parts is greater than the whole’ as it were. That is, his skill-set and personality complement the team and makes the entire bowling attack function better.

Actually, any team in the world would benefit from having Lyon in it.
