Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

Ashwin won’t be easily forgotten as he is a successful all rounder and India has barely produced all rounders, except now

he sure spent a lot of time deconstructing Smith and Labuschagne's batting based on what we can read and it worked a treat. it would have been interesting to see what he thought of not getting a single game in England but i guess some questions are better answered after you're retired.

How would Ashwin be forgotten when he would be the 1st spinner to be picked in INDAT XI ?

Have Aussie fans forgotten Dennis Lillee even when they have McGrath, Cummins?
He will be forgotten in the same way - by finding a single stat to prove he's **** and ignoring everything else.

Ashwin's batting stats are somewhat misleading. He's a touch player no doubt but he spent a good 2-3 years in there as little better than a tail-ender, and has only started putting a greater price on his wicket since Sydney.

he never went up a level with the bat when it looked like he could have. the Sydney innings he played are more the exception than the norm which is why you see him trying to score quickly and get as many as possible nowadays.

Ashwin has a fragile ego ... something he has in common with most ATGs.
Not a small persecution complex either. Guy can't seem to let go of past slights, perceived or otherwise.

Also, that last question in the interview and Ashwin's answer are a bit disingenous, but it's open season on Kohli so everyone gets away with throwing shade at the Indian Test captain. Ppl were fair to predict 4-0 after Adelaide and Kohli's return home. That it panned out otherwise gives the rest of the team bragging rights for eternity but as sweet as the eventual triumph was, let's not pretend it wasn't unlikely in the extreme while the series itself was unfolding.

Really? Why should Kohli be immune to any sort of negative remarks? His ego, on-field behaviour and selection blunders warrant criticism.

Genuinely didnt take that comment by Ashwin as a shot at Kohli tbh. There's some tension between them for sure, but I just took that answer as more of a "**** you for writing us off"thing which is how most competitive sportsmen who achieve something great are bound to feel.

This part felt more sour to me. :

When Kuldeep Yadav took those five wickets in Sydney and Ravi Shastri said he was India's No. 1 overseas spinner, he said: "There is a time for everyone." Which I felt suggested somebody else's time had come and gone. Did that have any impact on you?
I hold Ravi bhai in high esteem. We all do. In that moment, though, I felt crushed. Absolutely crushed. We all talk about how important it is to enjoy your team-mates' success. And I was happy for Kuldeep. I have not been able to get a five-for but he has a five-for in Australia. I know how big it is. Even when I have bowled well [at other times], I haven't ended up with a five-for. So I am genuinely happy for him. And it's an extremely happy occasion, to win in Australia.

But if I have to come and partake in his happiness, and the success of the team, I must feel like I belong there. If I feel like I am being thrown under the bus, how am I supposed to get up and come for a party to enjoy the team's or team-mate's success? I went back to my room and then I spoke to my wife. And my children were there. So we were able to, you know, shrug it off, and I still made it to the party, because, end of the day, we had won a massive series.
Considering not going to the party celebrating the first ever series win in Australia is ****ing hilarious lmao.

Also, the lack of five-fors thing clearly proves he reads CW, more specifically @subshakerz 's posts

Kohli has been India’s most successful captain ever by a wide margin.

no one is perfect and no one is immune to criticism but Kohli objectively is up there as one of the GOAT captains in terms of taking the Indian team to unseen heights.

Yeah, that's petty. Not shocking poor Kuldeep's career took a nosedive immediately after. @sunilz: panauti behavior don't you think?

Kohli got a team that has everything needed to dominate world cricket. The team does well with or without him, he should count himself lucky to have the kind of resources that he has. Results would have been the same with a different captain.

And this is like John Buchanan getting a successful Australian side and getting credit for the team doing well. Again, Kohli has improved leaps and bounds as a captain, but he has made his fair share of errors that are somehow not getting highlighted due to the kind of team we have.

Look at England, Root makes a couple of selection errors here and there and it gets highlighted everywhere and in Kohli's case we forget the WC 2019 debacle(and random youngsters shown the door after the recent WC loss), we forget how he handled Kuldeep and now Ashwin, we also don't like to talk about his on-field antics, etc.

Kohli gets a pass coz he has a team that's simply too good.

LOL, who wouldn't be pissed after your coach indirectly says that an upcoming spinner is better than the team's best spin bowler. "There is a time for everyone", wtf was that?

Sure Ashwin can't say these things in open, but he has indirectly hinted at the management not having enough faith in him. Whatever you say about Ashwin, he is a fighter and works his ass off. He has improved with every single game and deserves a lot more confidence from his captain and coach.

One thing about Ashwin is he seems like a wanker. He is easily a great bowler and if his team are not behind him it is probably because he has a grating personality. For instance, he seems to want to project this image of being an 'intelligent' player. That would ultimately piss your team mates off, however good you are. If the team are not behind him, despite all his results, it is probably to do with his attitude. He might work hard at his game and think about it a lot and the results are there to be seen, but there has always been 'something' intangible about him that has made me never take a shine to him. That might actually work in his favour, as it is what makes him have to work extra hard in spite of his talents

Whatever it takes!!!
I just think he is a nice guy who is also very competitive. And that competitive part takes over when he is dropped or overlooked, which is fine for a top level sportsman. He is also a guy who can do interviews with coaches, fellow players, opposition players. Loves watching cricket, watches whatever cricket he can anytime he has some sparetime. I just think we are reading too much into it.

I mean, it is totally possible to be friendly with the captain and still feel bad about him dropping you, even if it is explained that they could not play two spinners for whatever reason. I think few are reading more into the interview than the actual reality.
