I also don’t think this batting is any worse than 2003/2004. Yes you had the big dogs but it really fell off from there and the opening batting was weaker with no real partner to Sehwag. I would take Sharma on present form over Sehwag in any case.

Ashwin, Jadeja and Pant at 6, 7 and 8 create an X factor the 2003/2004 team didn’t have.

Batting isn’t just the top six.

I would argue the difference between 7, 8 and 9 today counteract /the difference between 2 and 6. And the presence of Pant, Ashwin and Jadeja and even Axar allow a India to play five bowlers which leads to more results

Whatever it takes!!!
FWIW, watching Sehwag, Pathan, Kaif and Parthiv smash Warney around was fun in the 2004 Chennai test. He bowled brilliantly to get that 6/150 or whatever and the record breaking wicket happened there too and he got a lovely standing ovation from the Knowledgeable Chennai Crowd ™ . We had a bunch of Aussies in our stand who said they had been in the same class as Warne in middle school and they took videos of his wicket. They also had a DVD of the Clarke 100 from the Bangalore test, which Slater walked over to collect from them. By that, I mean, we were in the first tier above the pavilion, and he walked around the boundary and asked them to throw the DVD case and caught it.
