That’s all fine for up and coming young players and actual test specialists like ChePu.

The accusation was that players can’t even say no to IPL. They can - they 100% can. The very top level players can. They don’t. They like the $.

Bumrah (especially) and Pant (arguably) are absolute generational talents that are massive to Indian cricket and it’s future. They can tell the BCCI to **** off if they want to and GENUINELY aren’t interested in T20 cricket/IPL and do not wish to partake.
They are interested. and also in the money it brings. You can’t have both.

I sympathise with the scheduling but IPL/T20 is basically funding all other cricket now so hey ho…
Sadly even ignoring money , we online never discuss that maybe the players . prefer playing the IPL rather than say test cricket?
Not suggesting they loath tests , far from it, but a lot of Indian players clearly love playing the IPL and look forward to it unlike than some of the oversea players who are their mainly for money.

I think the players (and Kohli in particular) value test cricket

I also think given their recent home track record they don’t feel the need for full strength against New Zealand when they have Patel, ashwin and Jadeja

this may be misplaced confidence

Fair points.

Rohit for example for so long in his career was a limited overs beast and a test laughing stock, he could have dropped it anytime but persisted with it not because he needed the money , far from it but he wanted to succeed in the format .

Yuvi was similar, loaded but kept playing ranji towards the end of his career because he genuinely loved the longer format of the game.

I think its possible that all generations really enjoy test cricket, but may like the IPL a little more.

I wouldn't be to worried about that until players start retiring from tests when they are at their cricketing peaks.

Makes axing Rahane less awkward. Although you wonder why dropping a non-performing professional has always been such a big deal for Indian selectors. Rahane himself can't possibly bear a grudge if he was told to sit out.

Whatever it takes!!!
This works out best. Virat is at his best as a captain in tests but seems to struggle with the fast moving nature of LO games. Rohit has shown he has the control and instincts you need for this format. Hopefully this unleashes the best of Virat the batsman across formats too.

Personally not a fan of a 34 year old new captain but there's serious lack of options. KL Rahul is meek & has negative body language most of the times leading Punjab in IPl. Pant & Iyer should be groomed to take on the side after 2023.

Let's wait and see if Iyer can last for more than an hour at the crease in SA before making him heir apparent.

He is gonna have trouble with his technique but there is something about the kid. Think he can find a way to make runs everywhere and in every format as long as he can toe the line between confidence and arrogance.
