Do we really think we're losing anything by having Wagner bowling a spell with Ajaz at the other end?

Would we really need 2 spinners bowling in tandem?

Isn't it just as likely that the Indian batsmen take a liking to one or both of our spinners? Forcing us to bowl our pacers into the ground? I'm not saying that we should play an all out pace attack or anything but those three bowlers should play.

Honestly it's a question of will one of Jamieson, Southee and Wagner or one of Ajaz or Somerville missing out hurt the team more, and one of the pacers missing out will cause alot more harm for NZ, especially with n AR like Ravindra available who is IMO as good a spinner as somerville

Somerville is a long way ahead of Ravindra, but hopefully India are silly enough to wheel out decks that decrease the gap between Ravindra and Ajaz/Somerville.
What is the point in 10 overs of medium pace or 20 overs of spinners who wouldn't even make the Indian domestic teams?
I agree with your overall point but this isn't 2002. Ajaz and Somerville have taken proper poles against Asian sides at home now and have very respectable FC records in the Shield, which hates spinners. They absolutely stroll into an Indian domestic side, there's like 18 of them.

Is somerville that good? Always thought he was average at best.

I know India’s resting a lot of guys for this test series. But I’d never write them off these days in tests they’ve grown another leg since they’ve beat Australia away this year with their b team and also probably would of beat England as well. They’ve got major belief to win anywhere

I know we need batting depth but I'd like to see all 5 bowlers play itbt. the dream team.

Have they? Had a scare at home versus England and lost WTC to New Zealand. I'm yet to see a third leg.

You can play one spinner who doesn’t offer much with the bat but you can’t play two, so Somerville misses out.

Young
Latham
Williamson
Taylor
Nicholls
Blundell
Ravindra/Santner
Jamieson
Southee
Wagner
Patel

I don’t think they’ll debut Ravindra as an opener. If they did then you could play Mitchell or Santner at no.7.

Jeez so the India series starts in two days? No wonder bubble fatigue has featured so highly in the NZC's calculations.

Did they have to go with the same squad as the WC though? Could have sent 5-6 additional players over and allowed those in the test squad to put their feet up.

Despite having my preference I could understand any of the structures proposed being the ones the selectors choose. There's only one player who should not be there, and even then on this specific tour Santner's inclusion is understandable even if I disagree given the balance we might use.

I'm not sure I would have selected Mitchell either to replace a specialist batsman (and opening option). His medium pace is better than his test record suggests but I'd like some actual poles before relying on him as a seam up option in India.

I think I would have selected Chapman (much improved batsman, disgusting bowling might actually be handy here) or Hay (we need an opener to fill in short term and hit the ground running. Hay finds the Shield easy and has over a decade of experience).

Given all the new graduates to the senior side, what does a home game NZ Second XI actually look like these days? A realistic one, so no 36 year old Hay.

Rutherford (c) (Greg Hay pls)
Ravindra
Young
Phillips
Chapman
Mitchell
Cleaver (wk)
Henry
Duffy
Ferguson
Ajaz

McClure, Fletcher etc looming. The batting needs a couple of NZ A seasons to ah, season it but the bowling looks ready to graduate.

I would back that lineup to beat most other A teams around the world In nz conditions tbh, bar maybe india and australia.

Ah, Seifert would definitely be in that team.

I wonder if any of the test players coming over can join for some these t20s? Will they get there on time, and will there be any bubble-type restrictions preventing it.

E.g. an Ajaz or Latham or Young wouldn't hurt their prep too much to fill in for a T20. Give Kane a bit of a break.
