*Official Third Test at Headingley* 25-29 August

What a bizarre scorecard to wake up to.
Its the other side of test cricket sadly.

Unless you are English, a test fanatic, dislike India immensely or have bet on this then what's the point of watching ?

Shame as we have had some really good tests recently, but this was over before tea on the first day.

So we're all for India trying to take off Anderson's head tomorrow morning right? It's justifiable.
Honestly I'm surprised opposition bowler targeting doesn't happen more often. The "spirit of cricket" suspension of disbelief where we're allowed to fling a ball at a specialist batsman to take his head off but never admit that's what we want to do does have some honourable effects I suppose.

Because opposition bowler targeting would be an intelligent min-max tactic. If cricket video games had contact injuries, anyone who claims they wouldn't bounce the AI tail until they're all dead is a liar.

I tend to flick these games on when they're scheduled like this as the first few days are between footy matches here in winter. Basically just watch because it's test cricket between two established sides in what can be challenging conditions.

It's just such a discordant scoreline to read. 400+ plays double digits just looks so weird. But I really don't mind who loses this match or series, because if either of these sides are losing it's a win for all good people everywhere.

These series are interesting from a personal POV, because there's the obvious natural hatred of England. They're just a terrible sporting nation and people who have a win in something every 20-30 years then think it's 1826 again and they're ruling the world, when really they're just mediocrity in the form of an entire nation which consistently under-performs given their large, diverse population and long established first-world resources. And tbh James Anderson is probably the least likable cricketer I've seen in my time watching the game. The bloke has tissue paper for skin and resents copping back precisely what he's happy to dish out.

Then you have India, the new-monied trash of world cricket. I actually quite like their side and a lot of their players these days tbh. Now they have decent quicks they're a great watch, and I've even started warming a bit to Kohli, who's brash but plainly prioritizes playing test cricket for his country and gets over heated at times, but a great player. Obviously Jadeja is massively over rated because he's a finger spinner and Ashwin can't even consistently make their side, but aside from them, they're ok. It's just their supporters are basically the worst sports fans in the world, as is so often reflected on this very forum.

So it's difficult, because obviously as a decent person you want England to lose, but at the same time you want the usual suspects on here wallowing in misery.

It's a tough watch. Hopefully a 2-2 draw and no one really happy.

This approach seems to be, relatively, a new attitude to pace bowling. I can recall the unwritten fast bowlers' law that you wouldn't bounce each other. Short pitched bowling against tail-enders resulted in bowlers being warned and, if they continued, they could be removed from the attack. Remember the warnings issued to John Snow in the '70-71 Ashes series and the subsequent crowd reaction when Terry Jenner was felled (albeit because he ducked into a shortish ball).

Only plus india can gain during this test match is if a indian batsman can at least score a 100 innings, that is very unlikely

Agreed, but batsmen should at least be allowed to charge the bowler and try to punch him out like in baseball.

My only conclusion is that the reduction in the length of his hair has unbalanced him.
Not saying this type of analysis isn’t accurate but I always wonder how well do individual stills of player’s bowling/batting actions represent their overall action throughout the game. There’s hundreds of deliveries in a game. I guess fundamental aspects like this are instinct at some point and don’t change ball to ball.

Whatever it takes!!!
He was very obviously not in rhythm throughout the bowling inning so far though. The issue is also exacerbated with both Siraj and Jadeja (in his first 10 overs or so especially) unable to provide the control they usually can with their bowling.

All said, 300/8 is actually a pretty good effort from India considering the day in isolation.

Best case scenario for India is get the 2 final wickets quickly and then collapse by lunch and give the bowlers a much needed few days off. ??
